Default Fun fact about Steph Curry

Was never offered a scholarship from a major school
Quote:
At Charlotte Christian School, Curry was named all-state, all-conference, and team MVP while he led his team to three conference titles and three state playoff appearances. He finished his senior season by shooting over 48% from three-point range. Despite the success Curry had in high school, the then 6-foot (1.8*m), 160-pound senior did not receive any scholarship offers from major-conference schools. Since Curry's father, Dell, played for Virginia Tech and is in their Hall of Fame, Curry wanted to play for the Hokies, but the Hokies only offered him a place as a walk-on player.[6] After receiving offers from Davidson College, Virginia Commonwealth, and Winthrop,[7] Curry chose Davidson College, a school that had not won an NCAA Tournament game since 1969.

the great ones always have a underdog story. look at jordan..high school caoch cut him. scottie pippen went to university of little rock arkansas as well as derek fisher.not sayin derek fisher is great. it is odd that no one took a chance on curry considerin he has always been a great shooter...i understand the height and weight being big factors on prolly y he didnt get alot of offers. but cmon when a 30 footer is a layup to u..u should at least get offers from duke and north carolina considering he resided in that area. hell at least north carolina state. recruiters failed miserably in the scouting of him.

Considering even today Curry looks like a jr. high school kid, he must have looked like a fetus back then.

Sounds kind of like Jeremy Lin's story. I think people do discriminate in basketball based on looks.

That's amazing.

Especially considering his father was an NBA player, and perhaps VT's greatest player ever.

And it's not like VT has ever had a good player since I can remember. They have one player who even got drafted (Deron Washington) that I can remember, and it was end of the second round, never made a roster type of thing.

The guy that you could argue "took" Curry's VaTech scholarship, Nigel Munson, averaged 3ppg as a freshman, dropped out of school for 2 years, and was playing Division 2 ball last year at 25 years old.

VT is more known for their football program than basketball. I could be wrong but I think athletic scholarship depends on the strength of the school's athletic department. VT's basketball program probably is limited on scholarship because they focus most of its athletic department on their football program.

Just my uneducated guess on college athletic scholarships. It'd be an interest thread topic.

Every division 1 basketball team gets 13 scholarships, football teams get 85. Only time it's different is rules violations or school/league policy, the Ivy League schools don't offer athletic scholarships for example, though that policy gets skirted.

VaTech football program has a total of 89 players on scholarship for the upcoming 2013 season. Their basketball program has 8 (2 for freshmen's).

4 of those football players won't have scholarships come the season. They have 6 freshmen coming in for basketball, one of them (or a guy already there) isn't going to get a scholarship come the season.

Good to know.

I didn't realized they give out that much for football players. I see why college football is so popular, even more than the NBA, because it's has a lot of funding behind it.

Yeah, I don't have any numbers to back it up, but I'd place a good sized bet that if college football were a pro league it'd be the 2nd most profitable in the US by a large margin.

Even though basketball program is more limited, it's still unbelievable that Curry didn't get any scholarship offers.

And conversely Austin Rivers was McDonald's All American and even got a scholarship to Duke.

And so far...a disappointment... LOL
