4 2004 Indiana Pacers

vs.

5 2000 Portland Trailblazers

Preview: The 2004 Indiana Pacers went 61-21 in the regular season good for the best record in the NBA. They lost in the ECF to the eventual champions Detroit Pistons in a very nice defensive series. They were led by All-Star PF Jermaine O誰eal and All-Star DPOY Ron Artest. Overall a very good defensive team that has many good offensive weapons, will be a tough team to beat.

The 2000 Blazers went 59-23 in the regular season before coming very close to upsetting the eventual champion 00 Lakers in the WCF. This series is still regarded as one of the closest ever in the Shaq/Kobe era. This team was very deep with great veterans all-around. You had Rasheed, Pippen, Sabonis, Damon Staudomire, Steve Smith, none of these players were in their primes, but each were close to their primes. Overall the Blazers are a team that have proven they can beat anyone, so it wouldn稚 surprise me no matter how far they go in this tournament even as a 5 seed.

This will be a tough series. The Pacers easily cruised to the 2nd round in 5 games over Toronto, while the Blazers avoided the upset coming from back from 3-2 to win their series in 7 games. Both these teams in real-life lost in the conference finals. They were both built similar, both had All-Star PFs in Rasheed Wallace and Jermaine O誰eal, while both also had stud wings known for their defense in Scottie Pippen and Ron Artest. The stars of Pacers were more in their prime but the Blazers overall had a deeper team. Who wins these battles will be crucial in determining the winner of this series.

The game was tied at 90-90 with just 1 minute remaining in Game 7. Clutch 3 by Tinsley and a big bucket by Jermaine O誰eal sealed the faith of the Blazers who lost some heartbreakers in this series defeat.

Only Portland would give up a 3-0 lead... I always thought those two were comparable teams, the early-00's Blazers and mid-00's Pacers. Both certainly good enough to win it all, balanced team top to bottom, no real superstars but first options who could play like one (JO and Sheed), former superstars on their last leg (Pip and Miller), great coaches on sideline, and zero Finals appearances.

Yeah and the series was neck to neck, tied at 90-90 in Game 7 with 1 minute remaining.

1 2000 Los Angeles Lakers

vs.

4 2004 Indiana Pacers

Preview: The 2000 Lakers finished with a 67-15 record, the best seen in the entire decade. Definitely making them worthy of a #1 seed in this tournament. The playoffs weren't as easy, but they made it through eventually winning the championship. O'Neal was at his peak and maybe the best player in this entire tournament. Kobe was an all-star but not quite in his prime yet. Nonetheless, they had Rice who was probably the best role-player they had in their 1st 3-peat and could make up for Kobe not being at in his prime yet.

The 2004 Indiana Pacers went 61-21 in the regular season good for the best record in the NBA.

The Lakers made it through the 1st 2 rounds but it hasn稚 been easy. They beat Memphis in 6 games in the 1st round while Utah took them all the way to 7 games. The Pacers easily went through Toronto but were challenged in a tough 7 game series against Portland. They trailed 3-0 before coming back and stunning the Blazers. But this shows this Pacer team has heart and can comeback and beat anyone no matter the count. This will be a tough matchup. The Lakers have homecourt advantage and are a tough home team, 6-1 at home in this tournament. The Pacers will need a road win, which they can get. There is no stopping O誰eal, he averaged 29/14 in the 1st round and 30/14 in the 2nd round, but the Pacers have DPOY Ron Artest to take out the Laker痴 2nd biggest weapon Kobe Bryant. Artest did a good job on VC in round 1 and good job on Steve Smith in round 2, if he can find a way to shut down Kobe, the Pacers have a shot at upset.

Game 1: at Lakers 102, Pacers 75

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore...u=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: S.O誰eal 29pts/26reb/5blk

Recap: The Lakers play their best basketball of the tournament as they dominate the Pacers in Game 1. O誰eal was a monster on both ends of the floor today, he led the Lakers with 29 points while dominated for LA on defense to as the Pacers overall scored just 75. Kobe was quieted by Artest had only 13 points, but Rice stepped up and finished with 20.

Game 2: at Lakers 103, Pacers 96

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore...u=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: S.O誰eal 40pts/16reb on 15/23 FG

Recap: The Lakers take a 2-0 lead in the series from another monster performance from O誰eal. Limited by foul trouble in the 1st half and trailing by 3 entering the 4th, Shaq dominated the 4th with 17 points in the 4th quarter as part of his 40 point game. The Pacers had no answer for that and now find themselves down 2-0. Artest did a good job limiting Kobe again holding him to 6/17 shooting but Rice had a good game.

Pacers give Scot Pollard a chance to guard O誰eal, and higher the minutes of their stars as its win now or never in the sweet 16.

Game 3: Lakers 107, at Pacers 84

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore...u=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: S.O誰eal 24pts/22reb/5ast/4blk

Recap: The Lakers take a 3-0 lead in the series with another dominating performance in Indiana. The Pacers were 6-1 at home in this tournament prior to this game, but it did not matter. They did a better job guarding O誰eal, double teaming him harder but the Laker role-players stepped up big. On the other end, Shaq led the Lakers on defense as he continues to show why he is the best player in this tournament.

Game 4: at Pacers 102, Lakers 87

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore...u=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: J.O誰eal 24pts/14reb

Recap: If there is any team that can comeback from 3-0, its the Indiana Pacers. They came back from 3-0 to beat Portland, and they will attempt to do it again vs. LA. They dominated this one, had a 27 point lead entering the 4th. They once again did a good job limiting O誰eal holding him to 25 points, and this was key as they finally played up to their level to cut it to 3-1.

Lakers higher the minutes of some of their stars while Pacers go to max minutes of their stars hoping to avoid elimination.

Game 5: at Lakers 91, Pacers 77

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore...u=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: S.O誰eal 27pts/18reb/6blk

Recap: The Lakers finish the series off in 5 games. O誰eal had another dominating performance on both ends of the floor, while Kobe Bryand had the best game of the series for himself with 28 points leading the Lakers. The Lakers did a good job once again limiting the Pacers on offense and advance to the Elite 8 of the Tournament.

A bad game from Shaq is 25/10/2/4 blocks >50% shooting.
