jeebus. kinda like the chris hitchens waterboarding simulation from a few years ago. tough call on the crying, reading posts i expected gag reflex eye watering but it did seem a lil over the top

over half of them are still being held in spite of having been cleared as totally innocent and a non-threat by every single intelligence/defense agency in the united states. and the number is misleading, it's typically between like 25 and 40 but its in constant rotation.... which is obvious considering the number of detainees involved in the solidarity strike.

why not just let them die? its a matter of publicity and reputation. were the prison to starve innocent men to death, the international outrage would be about a hundred times worse than it is with the force feeding which is already getting decent play tho apparently not in the right channels

also in case anybody didn't know, loads of organizsations including the American Medical Association has deemed Guantanamo force feeding as a violation of the geneva conventions, other respectable institutions officially call it a form of torture

lol thats the crazy catch 22. are they innocent? for the most part, yes and undeniably so from the highest govt sources. but are they a threat? well not to begin with but after losing a decade of their lives for no reason, they aren't to pleased. the catch is that letting them go realizes the threat, continuing to detain them increases it. really fked up lol

it's a perfectly respectable move, its not to gain attention for himself (maybe just a lil) but to gain attention for the issue he obviously cares about, and since he's such a popular respected dude it'll have some minor impact at least

maybe insensitive, but if it kills you that much to be force fed, then maybe you shouldn't refuse to eat

At this point who could blame them for hating America? I would be amazed if they didn't want to kill Americans after what we have done to them based on no evidence.

We have ruined these guys lives. Imagine if a foreign government much stronger than your own, arrests you for no reason and imprisons you for 10 years, with no charges and no prospect of when you will be let out.

Supposedly a lot of the guards jobs at gitmo is just to prevent suicide. We put them in padded cells, straitjackets, and other means of prevent suicide. Then they decide **** it, I am just going to stop eating and die of starvation, but nope we wont let them die that easy. Force feeding time.

So its almost like it would be stupid to let them go now. But if we dont let them go we continue to be evil. But at this point I cant even imagine how they wouldn't want to kill us. We have taken them away from everyone they loved for 10 years. No visitation at gitmo.

I feel the same way about this as I do a typical seat belt law. If some moron makes the PERSONAL CHOICE to not protect themselves by wearing a seat belt, then that's their choice. It doesn't put other drivers at any risk whatsoever, so what's the big deal? Oh wait, taxpayers have to pick up the tab of idiots who don't wear seat belts; well then you simply implement law that refuses treatment and help for those who personally refused to protect themselves. Same with these fasters.

How are seat belts in anyway related to people being imprisoned for no reason?

Decades from now historians will look back on Gitmo with shame and criticism. It will be a black eye on America.
American special forces arrest arabs based on nothing other than an accusation. Imagine your neighbour who hates you, reports to the Army rangers you are a Jihadi. just like that you are arrested and held without charge forever. How can you compare that with not wearing a seat belt?

im gonna post this here in case anyone is interested.

The Guantánamo Memoirs of Mohamedou Ould Slahi

through that link you can find, in print or in audio book format (bout 90 minutes), the memoirs of a west african man who has endured a horrific experience beyond any of our comprehension. i suggest taking a look, particularly if you're an american and can do something about it. it gets annoying because every 3rd word is "redacted" (mostly names of guards and interrogators) but still very intense and unfortuantely fascinating.

not just insensitive morally reprehensible but also totally ignorant of the facts

a) it's been ten years under extreme duress. many of these men would rather be dead. if they weren't hunger striking for publicity they'd probably be doing it suicidally
b) clearly eating and staying quiet wasn't working out very well. the only chance they have is to bring media scrutiny to their situation, and their only means is a hunger strike.
c) there are no legal restrictions to over 50% of them getting sent home. just arbitrary bullshit political ones.

this analogy would be apt only if the car was remote controlled by satan who would drive you into the grand canyon whether you were wearing a seatbelt or not

seriously take a second and try to understand the facts here

they've already been mentioned in this thread. most significantly, over half have been officially cleared of any wrong doing and deemed NOT A THREAT by the highest collection of intelligence and security agencies in your country. that means the cia, the nsa, the defense department, the joint chiefs, etc etc etc etc. yet nothing happens and they sit without even a kind word. these men deserve significant reparations, they'll be lucky to see their families again (if they aren't already blown off the map by that point).

obama established a moratorium on yemeni detainees returning to their homeland, primarily because yemen is the arabian center of his drone program and the worry is their vengeance will be exacerbated by that fact. that moratorium, made by executive decree and easily repealed (this only happened about a month ago when obama first spoke openly about the drone program), is the primary reason the administration offers for failing to return innocent men to their homelands.

this is a minuscule sample of how the "war on terror" perpetuates actual terrorism targeting the united states and its allies. guantonomo isn't the worst of current atrocities, it just happens to be a convenient example of blatant injustice that nobody can deny. the fact that you're comparing it to fking idiots deciding not to buckle up is a disgrace to your intelligence and your integrity. the fact you seem interested in knowing better is a small step on your way to some redemption, but it's gonna take a whole helluva a lot more on behalf of you and your countrymen before this calculated violence comes to an end.
