Default Lakers News: Lakers Sign Free Agent Guard Nick Young

longtime lurker & DKLaker happy now?

Quote:
Nick Young played with the Philadelphia 76ers last season, averaging 11 points, two rebounds in a reserve role off the bench.

Perhaps the most obvious thing Young will add to the Lakers roster is much needed youth and athleticism. There is even a chance that he could be the starting shooting-guard at the start of the season with Kobe Bryant recovering from surgery on his Achilles.

Considering their financial restrictions, this is a great signing for the Lakers and a valued pick-up that fans will love.

After being quiet and under the radar for the most part of free agency, the Lakers have been bolstering up their roster over the past few days. Since the departure of Dwight Howard, the Lakers have signed Chris Kaman and Jordan Farmar to their roster. On Thursday they made another addition.

Well, the Lakers have a bunch of guards now. At least we're finally getting some youth on the team.

I hope Nick Young plays well on this 1-yr deal. Lakers may extend the guy on a 3yr deal if he does well. Remember, Lakers have needed somebody to back Kobe up since Vujacic left couple years ago. I'm hoping Nick Young is the guy going forward. He can also play SF for stretches so as long as he doesn't go too much into chuckmode, Lakers could make good use of him.

I would love it if next summer, Lakers could have
Nash/Blake
Kobe/Young
SF FA-superstar signing like Carmelo(or Deng)/Young
Gasol
FA-star signing at C or PF/Hill

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Yes I'm very happy. Finally have another scorer on the team. Now sign Austin Daye and Wesley Johnson and this team can make some noise.

saw it and knew you two would be happy.

i am glad there is some younger players getting signed.

i am a big fan of taking a risk on some young guys also drafting and stashing over seas to see if they work out.

Interesting.
I'm thinking lakers are going to make a trade soon.

Nash, Blake, farmar
Kobe, young, Meeks

That's just a lot of quality players that I don't see comfortable not getting playing time.

UNLESS- they're thinking of using kobe, Meeks, young as a 3 as well.
And Blake and farmar as a 2.

Interesting.

Guess that's good bye to mini mamba. and Morris was pretty ok. Had upside.
Steve Blake was playing better during the end of last season but for 5mil, we should move him. Get a couple 2nd rounders

For the price, I love the signing.

Here's the roster as it now stands

PG: Nash | Blake | Farmar
SG: Bryant | Meeks
SF: Young
PF: Hill
C: Gasol | Kaman | Sacre

That's 10 players, Lakers need to add at least 3 more players (NBA rule).

I would add Lamar Odom, Sasha Vujacic and resign Ebanks. Throwback to 2008-10 Lakers teams (Ebanks in place of Ariza/MWP, Nash in place of Fisher, Young in place of Shannon Brown).

PG: Nash | Blake | Farmar
SG: Bryant | Meeks
SF: Ebanks | Young | Vujacic
PF: Odom | Hill
C: Gasol | Kaman | Sacre

If Kobe, Nash and Gasol can stay healthy and Ebanks and Odom are motivated this could be a very underrated team in the playoffs.

i would love for us to trade JHill/blake or JHill/Meeks and get a stretch 4(derrick williams) or good shot SF. i dont have anyone on my radar for sf

Odom has to come 1st if we are trading for derrick williams so odom can start at 4

i would also lookout for Wes Johnson/James johnson....good length guys...

how about nate/sasha for 3rd stringers?

1 name i like is tobias harris from Magic. they screwed us for howard...maybe they can do a fair deal

no defense team....like suns....let the real run & gun begin...lol

we wont win anything but would be exciting to watch...lets b realistic even kobe knows we aint winning sh!t this yr

Derrick Williams is not a stretch 4. He can't shoot.

James Johnson is basically the black version of Jason Kapono, whom the Lakers gladly let go a few years ago. I agree that they need Odom back starting at the 4, however Jordan Hill should be the primary backup at the 4 behind him.

Nate/Sasha would be good pickups as well. I want Ebanks starting at SF, I still believe he can be the Lakers Ariza 2.0

Love the signing! And I do agree Hill and Blake might be shipped out. We need a SF right now. I want Young off the bench! Lamar will be good to have again if we have to move Hill.

Starting to look decent folks.

I disagree with trading Hill, him and Pau together are very efficient on both ends of the floor when they play together, Hill is a great hustle guy, rebounding and defensively with a reasonably sized expiring contract, with Pau going back to being the low block, post up kind of role, it will allow Hill to roam more offensively, set screens, offensive rebound etc, just makes more sense in the scheme of things if we don't tank like we said we won't and want to at least be competitive.

If anyone needs to go it's Blake or Nash, Blake is making $4mill and we wil not get $4mill worth of production out of him, Hill's contract is cheaper and contribution on the court vs salary is much more value for money, now with Farmar back, Blake becomes kind of obsolete and can easily be replaced with a D-League or undrafted PG (i.e Siva) to be a 3rd stringer.

Of course these are just my opinions but this is how I see it and how I think we could get the best value out of the assets we have, unfortunately I don't think the market for Blake will be as high as Hill so it may not even be possible, but that's how I see it from a practical standpoint.
