I hear that and "short" all the time.
I'll usually say "nope" if a shot feels bad off the release, started as a tip for my rebounders, but over time I think it's just become second nature, for better or for worse ha.

I don't get pissed as a player if someone does this, personally, it doesn't do shit to change my shot.
I did have a teammate back in high school who always used to do that though, and would get warned several times by the officials. Some refs would let him get away with it but most of the time he'd get a "1 time warning" and would get teched up if he did it again.
It's all good though, anything goes out on the blacktop.
