Interesting to see how many NFL teams are valued higher than the Steelers just because of the type of national fanbase we have. Then again, we can't mess with a home market like NY, Houston, Chicago, Philly, etc.

Tom Benson bought the Saints for $70Mil in 1985 and now they're worth $971Mil. That is nuts.

I've always been perplexed at the value of the Houston Texans. They've only recently became a relevant and respected franchise, but have always since their inception been one of the more valuable teams in the league. Like you said, must be a very strong home market, because they're certainly no national favorite such as the Cowboys, Steelers, Packers or Patriots for example. I mean, how many Texans fans are there in Montana or Vermont?

The NFL maintains the most consistent/averagely valued franchise market. There's not a great variance in franchise values unless you start to get into the Top 5 teams or so. If you own a NFL team, you're positioned to be profitable even if the team you own is a consistent cellar-dweller.

Unlike MLB, where disparity reigns supreme between team-to-team values. You have clubs such as the Yankees, Dodgers, Redsox and Cubs, worth in the billions. Then you have the Royals, Pirates, Rays and A's, where values aren't even half. In some cases, not even a third or fourth the value.

You can even argue the NBA's disparity > MLB's.

It's crazy isn't it? Imagine just how profitable a struggling franchise financially the likes of a Jacksonville Jags, or not even a team having trouble selling tickets but in a weak market like Oakland, just picture the hype and buzz the Raiders going back to LA would bring to the table. Without a single superstar on their roster, they'd probably compete with some of the league's top selling merchandise leaders, not to even mention ticket sales.

National fan bases dont help you sell tickets to your home stadium. I guess that is the reason.
