Default Report: Raptors sign Austin Daye, 2 years $2 million

http://www.tsn.ca/nba/story/?id=428800

Quote:
The Toronto Raptors have reportedly bolstered their roster with the signing of free-agent forward Austin Daye.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports is reporting that the former member of the Memphis Grizzlies has signed a two-year, $2 million deal with the Raptors.

Daye joined the Grizzlies last season from the Detroit Pistons as part of the three-team deal that landed forward Rudy Gay in Toronto.

In 55 games last season split between the Pistons and Grizzlies, Daye averaged 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game.

Daye was drafted in the first round, 15th overall by Detroit in the 2009 NBA Draft.

Daye, 25, will be signed at or near the league minimum and the second year of his contract will not be guaranteed.

First reported by Yahoo Sports, the signing of Daye will cap the Raptors' roster at 15. The recently acquired Quentin Richardson is still under contract but will not play for Toronto as the team continues to weigh its options before parting ways with the veteran forward. The Raptors prefer to include Richardson in a trade but no deal is immediately imminent.

Me likey.

Cheap, undervalued guys. While I didn't like the signing of Psycho T (just because I don't like him as a player), it's hard to argue with the dollar amount compared to production. Masai has been going after guys that have been undervalued by the league. Augustin, Tyler Hansbrough and now Austin Daye. Not a bad way to fill a bench...

Not bad. It's a good low risk, high reward type signing. Definitely doesn't hurt the tank!

I'm not sure we're tanking yet. As it currently stands, not tanking...

Yeah, no big moves to dump some guys indicates a true tank.

I wouldn't be surprised if we make the playoffs, we actually have tough, defensive minded front court (SF-PF-C).

is it all guaranteed?

I'm hoping the second year is a team option, that way we can move him in the summer if we need to/if someone wants him after possibly raising his stock.

Was never a fan of his, but I can't complain at that price. Decent bench player at the very least.

Interesting moves by Masai Ujiri. He hasn't signed any long term deals (thank god), but he's also taken players who are inefficient players. Augustin, Daye, and Hansbrough are all below average players.

In fact outside of Amir and Val, the Raps don't really have any efficient players. Secret tank anybody?

Secret tank is interesting...though I am more firmly convinced that MLSE believes playoffs and Allstar game is the secret panecea for the franchise.

I have not noted their D efficiency ratings though and that may be a clue. I think all three "undervalued" players are going to be D focused in line with the coaching regieme.

A 5 team move up the d efficiency rankings (to where the Raps were say 2 seasons ago) would in fact likely put them in line for 7 -8 seed eastern conference if sustained.

This may actually be a offensively challenged team as the scoring will likely be low and achored or saddled on (1) Gay (2) Derozan with a maginal shooting percentage unless he improves and (3) post buckets off RB from Val and Amir.

How many 90 - 88 games will we see this year ? 50 ? Look for a lot of scripted half court games this season me thinks (sigh).

Further if the Raps sustain a D mentality they could win a lot of those 90 -88 games. 10 more "close wins" from last season puts them into the 38 - 42 category i.e. 7-8 seed.

If they did move lowry and gay this team would be a 10-20 win team.

A lineup of

Augustin
Derozan
Daye
Amir
Val

is one of the most anemic offensive units I have ever seen.
