Default 76ers coaching search is taking forever

The 76ers are moving at a snail's pace in their coaching search. Tuesday marks the 89th day since Doug Collins stepped down to take a consultant's role with the team, and it seems that no one except general manager Sam Hinkie and majority owner Josh Harris know when the coaching search will conclude.

But the conversation at some point will turn to the search for a head coach, a position that has been vacant since Doug Collins announced his resignation on April 18, a 3-month span that has included the draft, the beginning of free agency and a five-game run at the Orlando Pro Summer League. Michael Curry, who served as Collins' associate head coach during his 3-year stint, has been overseeing all basketball activities since Collins' departure. He, along with assistants Aaron McKie and Jeff Capel, are under contract for the upcoming season.

Fifty-nine days. That is when the Philadelphia 76ers will take the court in Bilbao, Spain for their first preseason game. Their October 6 debut will feature a totally revamped roster, a rookie who will be on the bench in street clothes in Nerlens Noel and a new head coach. Thatís right, a new head coach. While one still hasnít been named since Doug Collins stepped down on April 18, they will have to have somebody barking directions by then, presumably by the time the team opens training camp in late September/early October. So why the delay in finding a new head man, after all, 12 other teams in the NBA were able to find one since the end of the season.
