Default End of the Redskins name? Maybe...

The US Patent office cancelled the Redskins trademark (all trademarks containing the word redskins or related to said trademarks). You can't trademark a disparaging term.

What does this mean? The team can still be called Redskins. However, nothing related to the name can be trademarked, so me, you, new balance can sell Washington Redskins merchandise and use the name, colors, any trademarked logo and Snyder can't sue.

Sneaky and underhanded, I love it. This is like the Sterling thing in that at some point poor Snyder will be forced to change the name and sell a billion dollars in new merchandise that everyone will run to buy.

no, you're wrong. It's a huge issue. The problem is not knockoffs, it's the licensed products. Why would a company pay to use your trademark anymore? If you could live in your apartment rent free, would you continue paying the rent anyway, or would you stop? If you no longer had to pay to use the subway, would you pay? Just "because"...

When their contracts come up, who resigns? They can't offer you excluvisity, and you can still use the logo and colors and everything without paying.

I assume because they want a redskins jersey that also has an NFL logo on it

I'm guessing that's how it works

The merchandise that others can make legally would be limited to t-shirts and key chains...things of that nature

You can't create anything WITH the NFL logo...OR with the likeness of an actual player

guess what?...you go to ANY NFL game today and there are illegal vendors set up outside selling t-shirts and shit without paying the team a cent.

Snyder has been very stern about not changing the team's name, he has even said "the name will NEVER change". I don't think this is enough to motivate him.

If they do change it will be "Washington Warriors" though, as TMZ figured out Snyder owns the rights to that name.

People have an absolute heart attack and spent craploads of money protecting their trademarks. You're understating it quite a bit. The Washington Redskins no longer own their name and trademarks. That's a bit more than keychains.

People are way too sensitive. Something like 75% of Native Americans want the name to stay.

Also, at what point does it stop? It would be one thing if people stopped buying Redskins gear and Snyder was forced to change the name but if they're gonna deny the patent then what about other teams with somewhat offensive names? PETA has spoken out against the Packers name, are you gonna deny them?

They do still own it...just now everyone else does as well

It will probably equate to Snyder losing "x-amount $$$" and then he will have to decide if that is amount is worth going back on his word or not.

I was just pointing out that without the NFL logo along with the Skins name, there isn't too much others can do outside of t-shirts and trinkets that DON'T have the NFL logo OR the likeness of an actual player.

I think in life that you should fight things that are worth fighting. Fighting something "just because" makes no sense. WHERE DOES IT END? With this. There is no other team with a problem with the name that even comes close in football.

So he changes the name, he gets heralded by Indian groups and other people, he sells a shitload of new merchandise, he makes even MORE money, everyone gets the cool new jerseys. Or he sticks to it just to stick to it, and looks like a dick.

I don't get it. Look defiant to look defiant, or be heralded and get tons of money. What a tough choice...

the jerseys would stay the same I think...the actual logo with Indian head might even stay the same, there is nothing racist about an Indian head. The name would be the only thing to change, not the unis.

Most Native Americans don't even mind the name. In fact a greater % said they would be upset if it were changed than if it weren't.

I could sell a whole clothing line in Washington Redskins colors (or other colors) that actually said "Washington Redskins". I could personalize anything you wanted (except player name) for Redskins. I could open the "Washington Redskins Diner" near the stadium. You are talking like only bootleggers are affected. Actual companies could make merchandise that was as official as anything except no NFL logo. The amount of merchandise sold outside of official jerseys isn't as much as the jersey's but it's enormous.

like I said earlier, people are already doing that...they have been doing it since the NFL came to be

go to any NFL game and you will find illegal vendors outside selling merchandise WITHOUT permission
