Latest development is FIBA will either simply give 4 wildcards by November 23, with Italy, Turkey, Brazil, and China said to be big favorites.........

or FIBA will invite 10 teams to play at a tournament, and the top 4 teams will get the last 4 places.

It would be really nice to see them have a wildcard tournament. Because just giving the wildcards out to whatever whim FIBA has really isn't fair at all.

FIBA announcements on the wild cards:

The wildcard candidates will be announced on November 23, 2013.

The 4 wildcards will then be announced on February 2, 2014.

FIBA also added a new rule to the wildcard criteria. If a national federation is lobbying for a wildcard based on "if X NBA players plays", as has been suggested be done in this thread (example, "Dirk should just say he is playing so Germany gets a wildcard").....................

if a national federation does that, then they will have to obtain a commitment from the said players that verifies they will play at the tournament.

So many arguments being made in this thread for "X team should be guaranteed a spot, if they just say their NBA players will play" are proven non pertinent as arguments.

Federations won't be allowed to make such claims. They will have to have verification from the NBA players that they will definitely play at the tournament.
