76ers training camp set to open
IF THERE HAS BEEN a season that has had lower expectations for the 76ers recently, you would have to go back a long time. A run at one of the eight playoff spots in the Eastern Conference doesn't appear to be realistic. And that could be the way this organization needs to go right now, as building for the future is the priority.
Gone are the past two All-Stars, Andre Iguodala and Jrue Holiday. Veteran players are scarce, young ones abound and a first-time NBA head coach will oversee it all.
Tomorrow, the Sixers will have their first two practices of training camp, held again this year at Saint Joseph's University. Rookie Michael Carter-Williams will man the point-guard spot. Fellow rookie Nerlens Noel will man the bench for at least the first half of the season, recovering from major knee surgery, and coach Brett Brown will depend on veterans Thaddeus Young, Spencer Hawes and Evan Turner to bring respectability to what could be a very forgetful season.
