49ers completely have their head in the sand about Smith. The concern seems to be when he can return this year and if they can convince the league to be lenient. Because with the problem he's having, they think it's best he play football. Totally unselfish on their part.
It's a wonder why teams sign coaches like this, despite everyone knowing they will fail. The dictatorship style rarely works in the NFL, and a lot of these egomaniac college coaches refuse to change.
He gets roasted pretty good on local sports talk radio down here. It's pretty funny. From what I gather, the dude is a huge prick who is a "my way or the highway" guy, an awful approach to take when you have zero NFL coaching success or credentials to speak of.
I don't think the Giants see overwhelming value in a 3rd round pick. They still need people to come see the last eight games, they still want the players to keep playing. The Giants are not in tank mode. People look at this from their point of view, not what the Giants normally do.
There is literally nothing in their history recent or otherwise to suggest the Giants would rather have a 3rd round pick than Nicks production. If it's a higher can't turn down type of pick maybe. But 3rd - it seems very unlikely.
If you can get a 3rd for essentially a #3 receiver who's leaving in FA, you do it. The # of people that wouldn't buy Giants tickets because they traded Nicks is equal to the # of members of Nicks' immediate family.
