Exactly. How can you ever become a great player if you are never given the opportunity to be in the game when it matters most. He's not gonna learn how to play down the stretch by riding the pine. And it's upsetting that it STILL seems we barely run through him at all. Derozan seems to be our #1 option, I get that. But at least run a few inside out plays to get Val involved and give him a chance to do his thing in the paint.

Umm three games in just hold off a second there cowboys

Now if I were coach I would have Val in especially tonight - down the stretch; of course we always presume no fouls trouble good health etc. Big is more effective against Miami (x reference Indiana 7 game series). Further going small plays into the strength of the Miami line up core 3.

But this is still game 4.

You can make serious arguements that "situationally" playing small down the stretch makes sense against those opponents. Boston, Atlanta, and Bucks. Against those teams that is the best match up. I mean the arguement is not outright stupid.

This is not a "defense of the coaching staff" rebuttal... it is a reminder that we are three games in and Vals minutes at the end of the game are not a trend until you see him play games where it should make logical sense to have him in... Miami, Pacers (vs Hibbert), Wizards (Gorat) Pistons (Monroe Drummond) Knicks (Chandler)...

Game 4 : Miami Heat 101 Toronto 96

With their primary big man option gone Miami will be more dependent on ISO Lbron and Wade - than Toronto is dependent on ISO Gay and Derozan...

We'll see if the Raps really try to pound it inside but I expect Lbron will play big 4 and still win.

Three games of the same thing. It's not really a trend yet, but its all we have to go on as of now.

And why wait to throw him to the wolves against teams with good interior threats? Get him into those late game situations against teams with weak front courts, get his confidence up, and exploit their weaknesses. If a team throws out small ball, why not throw out Valanciunas to counteract what they're doing and force them into playing one of their weak interior players? Shit don't make no sense.

Exactly. A team like Indy is a perfect example of that. They've been super effective against Miami because they have Hibbert and West to bang on the inside and create an interior presence. They play inside out. If they tried to play small ball against them and bench Hibbert, they would not be an elite team. Now i'm not saying Val and Hibbert are equals but I am saying that we haven't exploited their weaknesses and they (the Heat) don't have a post player of Val's calibur. And as a matter of fact, a lot of teams don't nowadays because their 4s and 5s play perimeter ball like Bosh and Dirk. Val is the key to our future, and right now his development is being hampered big time. I don't know if it's by design but who else controls his minutes and the amount of touches he gets?

Maybe Masai's secret to tanking is having Casey as the head coach, because his rotations have been brutal.

When you tank, you want to develop your younger players though. I'd prefer to see JV and Ross playing a lot more. Also, it's kinda sad that those two are basically the only players on the roster you can attach the word "potential" to. And with Ross, it's probably very limited.

This team always looks disoriented and confused in close late game scenarios. No surprises there, another day another loss.

+1

I missed most of yesterdays game but cuaght the tail end last few minutes. Again much like Miami I 'hear' Jonas got the ball lots early - with success -and it tailed off.

I am agreeing that the team is not preped and not ready to handle the crunch and the players are either not enacting coaches plans - or worse the coach has the wrong plan.

The coaching staff is going to have to make 2 player hold themselves more accountable based on 5 game trend ; or be held accountable themselves.

<from hoopsstats.com>

Rudy Gay 2013-14 YTD
3.8 Assists 1.9 Steals = 5.7 Offence contributions. 5.7 Turnovers

Demar Derozan 2013 14 YTD
1.4 Assist. 2.1 steals = 3.5 Offence contributions 3.5 Turnovers

Essentially NET ZERO contribution other than jacking up the ball to the hoop and making X %

By way of camparison.

JV 2013 14 YTD
15.6 RBs 0 Assists 1.0 Steals = 16.6 Offence contributions. 3.1 Turnovers

For this team to win Gay / Derozan are needed to score points but also REQUIRED to "Contribute in a net positive way" to the offence with assists steals etc....
