the Jazz could trade their top upcoming draft pick and either Gordon Hayward or Enes Kanter for Love this offseason should they do it? What if they had to throw in a future first-round pick as well?

You'd have to certainly consider it depending on where they are drafting. Don't think they can trade the rights to a restricted FA though can they? Probably have to throw in more. Neto, Tomic, Gobert, Evans... Favors would be a better fit defensively next to Love than Pekovic.

It'd have to be one of those "signs an extension when traded" deals. I wouldn't have high hopes of him sticking around otherwise.

As I've said I think the best move depending on what the overall price is and what other options are out there to spend their money on is to front load his contract. Overpay him next year when they have the money to do so. Than they have a lot more flexibility moving forward and they keep him around.

It is so nice to have Derrick Favors on the floor. Utah moved to 17-9 when playing a full roster. The Jazz’s rim protection tonight was much better than it has been, but the great thing tonight was that Favors was an offensive force. He hit two mid-range jumpers in the third quarter, and also hit a sick baseline turnaround jumper. This shot has not been falling for Favors—he is just 29% from mid-range this season—but if he can start to knock these down he can become a legitimate offensive player as well as a great defensive player.

Big ifs still on both counts.

Quote:
Favors’ value is real.

The Jazz did a better job of getting out in the open floor and hitting with some early chances tonight.

Marvin Williams had awesome energy, both offensively and on defense.
Hayward plays well with Favors. It’s no surprise that he had 10 assists tonight.

Corbin changed the rotation tonight and didn’t play Brandon Rush. He also played Kanter and Favors together for short spurts on the floor.

Buy out Rush and or Biedrins? Not sure anyone else wants them. Biedrins could certainly help some teams.

Quote:
Burks is playing super basketball. Tonight he defended Rondo when Burke couldn’t get any stops. Burks has always been a good defender on the ball, particularly on the point guard. He’s getting better and better at getting off picks and staying on the ball. He’s getting better at staying with it for entire possessions. These are very important steps in his development. On the offensive side, not every drive is to the basket. Instead, he is finding people on the drive before it is do-or-die time. He is playing under control in a manner that allows his teammates to know where he is going and play off of him. These are very exciting things for Alec. 20 points a game over the last six games is nice, but these other issue are going to change him from a Jerryd Bayless type who doesn’t help you win to a complete player that helps put Ws on the board.

Bayless helped Memphis win last year.

Quote:
Jeremy Evans had a career-high four blocks.

Phil Johnson said on the air tonight that Enes Kanter will become a 3-point shooter in the NBA.

I would think so. But he's too good in the post to become another Okur.

Quote:
Solid win. Phoenix is next and then the road trip.

Might not be many more wins this year.

with Kanter at center against the Timberwolves, 1 the Timberwolves got 33 attempts within the restricted area, and made 22 of them. On the other hand, the Celtics got just 22 attempts inside that restricted area, making just 14. That’s a big difference.

They took less shots but hit a very high % as well.

Quote:
But Favors’ presence also allows the perimeter defense to step up its game. The Utah Jazz’s cameras caught me asking Richard Jefferson about how that works.2

Click above for the long answer, but in short, as Jefferson says, “Heck yeah.” Favors allows the perimeter players to press a little bit more, ideally getting more steals and allowing less airspace for the opposing team’s guards to get off a shot. If they are able to drive, the team has confidence that Favors will be able to make an impact behind them. That’s pretty useful.

2. Rajon Rondo is a feisty dude.

After seeing a big man with the passing and shooting skills of a guard on Saturday (Kevin Love), it was fun to watch Rajon Rondo play the Jazz tonight. Rondo is the polar opposite of Love: a point guard with a big man’s fight and rebounding ability. Throughout the game, Rondo was jostling and elbowing his matchup for position, on both offense and defense. Whenever contact was possible, contact was garnered. In the 1st quarter, as a Celtic big man went to the free throw line, Rondo lined up alongside Derrick Favors to try to snag the rebound, and after battling for the board high in the air (and losing the fight due to Favors’ size), Rondo sneakily stripped it when the big man took the ball down low.

Later in the game, the trend continued: even as the Celtics were down 10 late in the game, Rondo fought as if the game still was within reach. It’s such good news for the watchability of the NBA to have Rajon Rondo back in uniform.

3. Ty Corbin on two point shots vs three point shots.

At shootaround today, Celtics coach Brad Stevens was asked about his offensive philosophy, and according to Jazz radio play-by-play announcer David Locke, said “We all know a 33% three point shooter is better than a 47% 2 point shooter.” Locke noted at the time that it was “radical” for a coach to say that, and as the NBA continues to move towards the 3 point shot, I thought I’d ask Corbin about his opinion on the subject. Here’s how the exchange occurred:

Me: “Brad Stevens said earlier today that he’d rather have a 33% 3 point shooter than a 47% 2 point shooter, do you agree or is there more to it than that?”

Corbin: “That’s his philosophy.”

Me: “What’s your philosophy?”

Corbin: “I like to have a guy shoot 100% from both spots.”

Corbin’s right, of course3, but it’s worrying that he distanced himself from the mathematical truism of 0.33 * 3 > 0.47*2. Ahead of this weekend’s MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, 4 the influence of mathematics has over basketball will be in the limelight, and the Jazz’s coach is going in the other direction.

On the other hand, if Jerry Sloan had said the above, we’d all read it as a classic Jerry-ism, along the lines of suggesting to have an ice-pick fight in the parking lot. And there’s a certain amount of sense in crafting every possession to succeed, rather than just some of them. But the truth of the matter is that shots are going to be missed, and it probably makes sense to embrace that reality.

Dean Oliver in this brilliant book broke the game down into the 4 Factors, Defensive Effective Field Goal % (it weighs 3 point shooting) DFTA Rate (the amount you put people on the line) DTO% (% of possessions you force a turnover) and DREB% (% of defensive rebounds you get)

Here is how the Jazz have changed over the course of the season

FOUR FACTORS DEFG% DFTA% DTO% DREB%
First 25 games 24th 26th 24th 29th
Last 20 games 9th 16th 30th 13th

In three of the four categories the Jazz have really considerable growth. The 9th in DEFG% over the last 20 games is really exciting. In addition, the Jazz have been notorious for the amount they foul and that has subsided. Finally, the Jazz have moved above average in defensive rebounding despite playing with a stretch 4.

The only area where the Jazz have been inadequate is their lack of forcing turnovers. Ranking 30th doesn’t tell the whole story. The current rate of forcing turnovers over the past 20 games is historically low at only 11.8% of opponents possessions.

Overall the Jazz have improved from ranking 30th defensively in the first 25 games to 23rd and if they can begin to force some turnovers they will be near average in a hurry.

I keep hearing that there is no development going on with Ty. Looks like there is to me.

The Jazz blew out the short-handed Suns and moved to 18-9 when healthy. Utah played enough defense in the second, third and fourth quarters to make it tough on the Suns, and Phoenix didn’t have the firepower to fight against it.
Gordon Hayward finished an assist short of the triple double. The big moment to me was when Hayward missed back-to-back threes from his old sweet spot on the right side of the floor, and instead of falling out of favor with the game as he did against Minnesota, he jacked it up a notch. He went to the basket hard. He got in the open floor. He attacked the rim for some great dunks. And he finished with a huge night. All 10 of his rebounds were on the defensive glass.

The Jazz have won seven of their last eight with Derrick Favors in the lineup. The schedule has given the Jazz some breaks (tonight for example) but this team—when healthy—has figured out how to play and how to win. It is an impressive step for this team.

Again you got to wonder what they'd have done if the front office wasn't trying to lose.

Quote:
Favors covers an enormous amount of ground on the floor, but also holds court around the rim. Utah’s defense in games when Favors starts without Kanter allows 98.6 points, and tonight held the Suns to 86 points. When Favors is out, the Jazz allow 105 points.

Richard Jefferson got it rolling again after a brief shooting slump (33% from three is now a slump for Jefferson). He went 6-for-8 (and 2-for-3 from three) for 17 points.

Diante Garrett played for the Suns last year, and was let go after Summer League this year … then dropped a career-high 15 points on the Suns tonight. The best moment was when the Suns dropped off him on the right angle and he hit the three and then stared at the bench, which had been yelling at the defender to drop off.

He's gotten better. Still looks like he is a 3rd pg at best though.

Quote:
Garrett hit 3 of 4 threes tonight, making him 19 of 47 (40.4%) for the season.
Doing what your are supposed to do in this league should not be pushed aside as doing nothing. Tonight was a nice professional win for a young team.
See you on the road.

By excluding the 14 games to start the year—when Enes Kanter and Favors started together—and isolating the games the games Favors has started as the center without Kanter and the nine games Kanter has started as the center without Favors, the impact of Derrick becomes lucid.

Favors’ absence has been felt most vividly early in games with paint defense. In the games Favors missed, the Jazz allowed 13.8 points in the paint in the first quarter, contrasting to the games with Favors as the center at 12.4 points in the paint in the first quarter.

In addition, in the games when Favors starts as the center, the Jazz allow 60% shooting in the restricted area in the first quarter. In the nine games Favors was absent, the Jazz allowed 69.5% shooting in the restricted area in the first quarter.

Moving beyond the first quarter into the entire games gets a bit complicated statistically. In games when Favors starts, Kanter gets most of the back-up minutes. Whereas when Kanter starts, Rudy Gobert gets the back-up minutes.

According to the player-tracking data, Rudy Gobert is a very good defender at the rim. Gobert allows only 43.2% on shots within five feet of the rim. Favors allows 51.2% and Kanter allows 53.7%.

Are Gobert and Favors ever going to be able to play together offensively and/or defensively?

Quote:
For game-long data, an argument could be made that Gobert assists the numbers when Favors doesn’t play.

With the aforementioned weakness to this data, it is still revealing in regards to the impact of Favors. In the games Favors started without Kanter, the Jazz have allowed 46.2 points in the paint. In the games Favors didn’t play, they allowed 49.8.

In the restricted area for the entire game when Favors starts without Kanter, the Jazz allow 62.7%. And in games when Favors doesn’t start, it is 64.8%—despite the impact of Rudy getting more minutes.

The biggest number of all, however, is points allowed. In games when Favors starts without Kanter, the Jazz allow 98.6 points per game. In the nine games Favors missed, the Jazz allow 105.3.

Thanks to Bloomberg Sports for this data.

What about the offensive numbers? Kanter along with Burks are their best scorers.

I’m giving Gordon Hayward the triple-double, unofficially.

Yes, Gordon Hayward finished one assist shy of the technical triple-double, with his 17 point, 10 rebound, 9 assist performance that showed exactly how valuable he can be, even without making all of his shots. But given that Hayward was pulled out of the game with more than 5 minutes to go, it seems like if things were fair, Hayward would have gotten the first triple-double (Carlos Boozer) for the Jazz since 2008 against Seattle. Boozer got an assist in that game with under a minute to go with the Jazz up 18, if Hayward would have been given the same opportunity, I think he picks it up.

Also, Hayward had 3 secondary (or “hockey”) assists in the game, as many as the entire Phoenix team, as well as the rest of the Jazz combined. I’d say that’s a pretty good passing performance, good enough to earn the Andy Larsen Triple-Double, anyway.

No guarantees. Someone has to make a shot off one of his passes.

center Anderson Varejao (back), Dion Waiters (knee) and C.J. Miles (ankle), who are all questionable against the Jazz.

The six-game, nine-day road trip is the longest for the Jazz since 2003, when they had six games in nine days on their pre-Christmas Eastern road trip. … The Jazz didn’t practice Thursday morning before taking off for Cleveland. … In the previous game between the two teams in early January, the Cavaliers took a 113-102 win at EnergySolutions Arena. … Anthony Bennett, who Cleveland made the No. 1 pick for in last summer’s NBA Draft, has been a bust so far, playing in just 47 games and averaging 4.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and shooting 33.7 percent.

Every single Jazzman who saw time sported a positive +/- mark. Conversely, all but one Phoenix player was on the negative side of things, with the last one being even.

Greg Miller on whether the new CBA is helping small market teams stay competitive: “I think it’s had the effect of leveling the playing field. The luxury tax is now so punitive that even the markets with deeper pockets would have to be really crazy to go into that. I can tell you that as long as our family owns the team and the current tax structure, you’ll never see the Jazz go into the luxury tax. The playing field has been leveled somewhat. I think it’s a good thing for small markets. I think it’s a little too new to have a completely clear picture of the impacts. I think based on what we’ve seen, it’s been good for small markets and good for the league.” CBSSports.com
