Default Bill Russell NCAA game 29pts 16reb 3blk 2a on 84.6 fg% against 7 foot 3 opponent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7LqNAletFU

March 12, 1955 San Francisco vs Oregon State:
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/...gon-state.html

(from my Youtube description) 20 year old Bill Russell listed at 6-10 215lbs at the time, versus Wade 'Swede' Halbrook listed 7-3 and cited at 245lbs that particular season. Despite their difference in height and weight, an interesting news article from the time points out that Bill Russell had an even higher standing reach than Halbrook. Russell's height w/o shoes was cited that year at 6-9 and 5/8ths with an armspan of 7 feet 4 inches.

Advanced Statistics

Bill Russell:
29 points (11-13FG) 84.6% (7-11FT) 63.6%
16 rebounds
3 blocks
2 assists

Swede Halbrook:
18 points (7-19FG) 36.9% (4-6FT) 66.7%
18 rebounds
2 blocks
3 steals

7-3 means he's a 7-3 player - u know, a height that you claimed never existed back then.

And funny, until I provided enough evidence over the past two years to dismantle the falacy that centers back then were 'undersized' oldschool fans used to have to resort to saying 'well height doesn't mean your any good' when talking about MODERN players who oldschool-era haters kept pushing as 'better' based purely on assumptions drawn from height and old myths about 50's and 60's centers being undersized.

Now the tables have turned and it is oldschool-era haters such as yourself who are now backpeddling saying the exact same things those fans used to say when you backed them into a corner when evidence couldn't be provided that supported the truth that 7 footers or normal sized centers existed in abundance back then. Suddenly your switching up your story 'b-b-b-b-but height doesn't matter'. You lose Deuce

Any 7+ footer by default could have played in the unathletic leagues full of white scrubs that existed back then.

Swede looked more agile than what I would expect from a white player who would be called 7-4 today. Also pretty passionate, not afraid to gamble for steals and loose balls. I believe games like this would fool people into believing he would be at least a decent NBA player. Instead, he managed only a 2-season career as a role player at best.

I've said this before: Constantly raising the bar (often at heights that even most of today's players can't reach) is the only "weapon" of haters and ignoramuses. Someone who knows what he's talking about would not change criteria and resort to backpeddling.

From what I've come to understand he was limited by off the court problems - he actually could have been a solid NBA player strictly from an athletic/talent point of view at least according to his former coach Alex Hannum. He disappeared for a week one time during his brief NBA stint and they called the police to try and find him, he randomly showed up to practice a week later as if nothing had happened. People thought he was a heavy drinker, he was a loner for sure. He got kicked out of Oregon State his final season for not attending any of his classes. He had no intention of becoming a pro basketball player either, instead opting to play AAU ball for a company that hired him.

He was like 28 years old by the time he finally played an NBA game which is many years after he got kicked out of Oregon and as said, still had off the court issues the entire time. But his per-game stats in the NBA are misleading, he put up those stats on limited minutes - he never earned playing time due to his issues. On the floor I read that he was very competitive natured, would demand the ball in crunch time if he was in the game and take it to the hole strong. He actually does exactly that in the game I posted, those final two buckets he scores are with 13 seconds left on the clock and brought Oregon State to within just 2 points of SF. Also read that he had good hands - could palm the ball easily etc.

Pretty sure that's part of the point. Tall does not equal good even back then.

The Beavers boasted TWO seven-footers in that game...

http://si.com/vault/article/magazine...39/1/index.htm

Interesting, too, that the 69-70 Jacksonville team had both 7-2 Artis Gilmore, and 7-0 PF Pembrook Burrows.
