Best Available Head Coaching Jobs

Quote:
With six NFL teams -- the Texans, Lions, Redskins, Browns, Vikings and Buccaneers -- looking for head coaches as of 1:30 Monday afternoon, it's time to update our rankings showing which destinations candidates should find most appealing.

The list will surely grow as time passes, and we'll update it accordingly. For now, though, here are the choicest vacancies in the eyes of those around the NFL:

1. Houston Texans

The Texans have rock-solid ownership and a reputation for taking a first-class approach to all their operations. They exude stability, having employed only two head coaches during their 12-year history. Their first coach, Dom Capers, got four seasons even though he never went better than 7-9 in any one of them. Successor Gary Kubiak exceeded .500 just once in his first five seasons, but the organization stood by him. The decision paid off when the Texans went 22-10 over a two-year period.

Carr and Kubiak lost their jobs almost solely over quarterback troubles. The next head coach will be joining a team with the first pick in the 2014 draft, giving the Texans their choice of college quarterbacks. Houston already has arguably the NFL's best defensive player in J.J. Watt. That makes Houston one of the most attractive destinations for any candidate.

"They have skill players offensively," a personnel director from another team said. "Andre Johnson is a heckuva player. The young kid out of Clemson [DeAndre Hopkins] has done a nice job. They have two tight ends who can play, and a great defensive player in J.J. Watt They have an owner who wants to win and a ton of resources with all the facilities. They are willing to do what you need to do to get better in free agency. They have shown a commitment to the draft."

2. Detroit Lions

The Lions came close to ranking No. 1 on our projected list because they have patient ownership and winning talent on both sides of the ball. Not all personnel evaluators are entirely sold on Matthew Stafford as a franchise quarterback, but there is great potential, at least. Perhaps an offensive-minded coach could bring structure and discipline to a team that seemed to lack both.

"They have a QB, they have Megatron [Calvin Johnson], a running back, Ndamukong Suh," a GM from another team said. "You just need to improve the back half of your defense. [Team president] Tom Lewand is good to work for. There is an ability from a coaching perspective to probably get the personnel you want. Their ownership is outstanding. There is a degree of patience still."

The personnel director we polled for the earlier piece ranked the Lions high on his list for desirability in part because he thought Detroit's personnel was versatile enough to fit a new staff. An NFL veteran ranked the Lions first for their ownership. A team exec put it this way: "The Fords do things first-class behind the scenes and they give you time. [Jim] Schwartz could have been fired before. They have a great facility, the stadium is nice. The Lions appear to be a leader short of coming through."

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The next coach and GM in Tampa will be walking into a very good situation from a personnel standpoint. When the Buccaneers were 0-4 this season, a GM from another team singled them out as the team most likely to make a Kansas City Chiefs-style reversal for 2014.

"They may be a simple change away," the GM said. "They have been built well. It's a little bit like the 49ers were struggling before Jim Harbaugh got there. You have talented players. You are losing. A lot of the times during the evolution process, some of the people who helped build it get kicked off stage. Someone else takes over just in time. That defense is good. They are a tough draw."

An agent last week raised concerns about ownership in Tampa Bay, suggesting the sons of owner Malcolm Glazer are known to exert more influence than coaches and GMs would like. The agent called the situation "Jerry Jones light" and noted that the Buccaneers have not established a winning culture even though they won a Super Bowl when Jon Gruden was in charge.

"It's a place that they got over the hump, they started winning, they won a Super Bowl, but even with all that, they still haven't quite established a winning culture that can transcend the coach," the agent said.

4. Minnesota Vikings

The situation in Minnesota is less than ideal because the team needs a starting quarterback and will be playing outdoors over the next two seasons while the Vikings' new stadium is built. The relatively new and unproven team owners recently lost a $100 million lawsuit, raising questions about what effect that might have on the team's approach to finances.

The Vikings do have talent at the skill positions on offense. Adrian Peterson should be able to provide cover for the next quarterback, at least in theory.

"You can build around a running game," a quarterback from another team said. "Those receivers are very talented. I've been watching [Cordarrelle] Patterson and he'll be a really good player. They have a good tight end. No. 17 [Jarius Wright] is really good on film. Their offensive line is pretty good. That team hasn't had a QB since one year of Brett Favre. If they get someone to go in there and play well at that position, no one can predict what that will do for a team. Same for Houston."

5. Washington Redskins

The Redskins should rank higher than this simply because Robert Griffin III can be a dynamic franchise quarterback, but too many questions about the organization persist from repeated failed marriages between ownership and coaches over the years. One GM consulted for the earlier piece ranked the Redskins third on his list. Another longtime executive stressed more recently that defense, not RG III, is by far the biggest issue for Washington.

But until the Redskins prove otherwise, their situation remains a tough one for a coach to solve. High-profile coaches Mike Shanahan, Marty Schottenheimer and Steve Spurrier couldn't make it work. Joe Gibbs enjoyed some success, but overall, Washington is not nearly as appealing a destination for a head coach as it should be. The next coach will also be hamstrung by the absence of a first-round draft choice in 2014. The Redskins' pick, No. 2 overall, went to St. Louis in the trade-up for RG III. The agent consulted previously said he would advise clients to be wary of the opportunity.

"Owner dysfunction and front-office dysfunction, quarterback dysfunction and a tough media town there with a lot of media scrutiny," the agent said. "How fixable? I would say it's as fixable as Al Davis might have been in his later years, which is probably not very fixable. Griffin has his own issues and needs to be reined in and coached. A head coach has to come in there and coach his owner and his quarterback, both of whom are strong personalities. And of the three, the new head coach, if he is not a gigantic name, he will come in with less star power than the owner and the quarterback."

6. Cleveland Browns

The Browns have no franchise quarterback, and their leadership just fired head coach Rob Chudzinski one season after hiring him. The team owner, Jimmy Haslam, recently settled a federal investigation into his trucking company amid accusations of fraud. Cleveland has to be the least attractive destination for any candidate unless that candidate already knows and trusts general manager Mike Lombardi.

A longtime team executive consulted over the weekend for a piece on head-coaching candidates such as Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton applauded the job the coaches were doing in Cleveland.

"Horton has done an excellent job with a talented defense," the executive said. "The new leadership there traded the running back and looked like they were playing for a high pick to draft a quarterback, but if that was the intent, the staff has given them a better season than they wanted."

Cleveland will have an additional first-round pick after trading Trent Richardson. There's talent on defense. Receiver Josh Gordon has become one of the most dynamic players in the league. Those are factors in favor of the job.

The Browns did lose their final seven games. Perhaps that was enough to justify a change. But if you're among those who thought the front office was playing for the future, it's tougher to justify holding the head coach fully accountable for short-term results.

I think I'd put the Lions #1 and the Texans #2, otherwise I agree.

I want Jason Garrett fired...Romo getting injured is the best thing that ever happened to this mfer

Three straight years of 8-8 is enough for me... We are literally as "average" as it gets

The reason Romo has the most comeback wins and losses over the past three years? Garrett...Romo is put in that situation every Damn week... the way Garrett coaches makes EVERY FCKING GAME go down to the very last play... we win 8 and lose 8

The list is shit. How are the Redskins the 2nd least appealing team for a coach out of those teams? How in the hell is Minnesota more attractive? No QB and their defense was even worse than ours. Our running game has been better than theirs, too, so bringing up Peterson doesn't do much good. We have young talent on offense - RGIII, Morris, Reed, Williams, Garcon, Helu, and Hankerson. RGIII is healthy now, and there's no more salary cap penalties which really hurt depth and special teams. The team just made the playoffs a year ago, but somehow someone thinks that it's not fixable? Fix the defense, namely the pass defense and things should be fine. We had 2 rookies get valuable experience in the secondary, also. I know we don't currently have a 1st round draft pick, but even having the #1 pick in the draft doesn't guarantee you anything. If the team is winning, then the 'marriage' with the owner will be just fine, but that goes for pretty much every org.

I don't see what's appealing about the Bucs, either. They were average on defense, horseshit on offense, and haven't made the playoffs in a while.

Their reasoning for the Texans was because they have the #1 draft pick, J.J. Watt, and that the owners will be patient. Well, the #1 draft pick doesn't guarantee anything, and you could end up paying a lot money to a player who doesn't pan out. I know 3 rookie QBs led their teams to the playoffs last season, but I don't think it's the norm. They had Watt this year and they still went 2-14. And, maybe the owners won't be as patient as they have been in the past. The Lions have talent, so I'd agree that it looks the most appealing. If you're not winning, then you're not going to stay long at any place, so I'd go with the team with the most talent.

Don't you know? Because of Snyder hate and the name 'controversy' the media love to diminish the Redskins and pile into them, sportswriters and PC bleeding heart publications enjoy when they have controversy so they can remind America how badly we fail.

The shit storm the team created of its own accord was nothing to the tsunamis and super tornadoes dredged up by local and national media, where every little bit of disagreement or unhappiness in a losing locker room was turned into diabolical, evil conspiracies with ulterior motives to ruin careers, reputations, and personal character.

Some of it was true I'm sure but the coverage from all those angles were not and the media did a disservice to us all by having so many conflicting stories.

Snyder has never been a winning owner but the Skins situation isn't that bad once people move past his past follies in meddling and the sensationalist narrative that RG3 is now a prima donna crybaby brat a year after being the mature, team first leader that was being courted as a new face of the NFL.

Washington finally has a bunch of cap room to fill the holes that they have not been able to the past two off seasons with a couple key FA signings at positions of need.

TB fan here. glad schiano is gone. wanted him gone since early this season and i thought a few recent wins would afford him another season but thankfully it didn't. i had enough of schiano when he would run countless fruitless bubble screens and for playing revis in zone when he's arguably the best man to man cover the league has seen in the last decade.

lovie smith? not the best hire...but hey, i'll take it. still solid and still enough to turn this team around. i don't know if he can take us all the way when it comes to making adjustments, but he can change the culture. need some respectful discipline back in that locker room. just need to hire the right assistants. i just view him more as a transitional coach. i think if we hire lovie, revis might be movable. he's not ideal for a tampa 2 which lovie would probably remain rigid to.

we'll likely have the #7 pick and i don't trust glennon enough to say he's a starting QB....showed promise but i don't see how he's an overall above average QB. at least for a team that wants to make noise.

the glazers have opened up their wallets more the last couple seasons. hopefully, we just get a solid GM in place and some serviceable coaches. defense is there for sure.

let's face it...shanahan lost his job when he benched RGIII. franchise will back their star they poured millions on.

Thing that pisses me off is that Shanahan tried making a last move by playing Kirk Cousins and trying to make RG3 look bad. Instead, Cousins tanked and now his trade value is shot
