Default Poker Is NOT A Sport.

Why is poker considered a sport??? Why do you need commentators for poker??? It's not like the commentators know what these poker players are going to do??? It's ridiculous.

Sport should be defined as an athletic (ATHLETIC) game in which there is competition.

Saying poker is a sport, is like saying snooker or darts is a sport. Bottom line is they should never be considered a sport.

In poker, I don't see how sitting around a table throwing chips into the middle and looking at cards a sport. Nor do I consider snooker or pool a sport, walking around a table and hitting a few billiard balls into a pocket is not a sport.

poker, bowling, golf, ping pong, etc. all games not sports.

unless we define sports as an activity involving commentators that over use the words "greatness" "freak" "amazing" "ridiculous" "can you believe it!" etc etc

According to Wiki, this is the definition of sport.

Sport - Sport is the term to describe physical games. It can be outdoor or indoor. A sport is a game, contest, or activity needing physical power and skill.

The thing i dont exactly get is..
If ESPN is a "sport" channel, why do they show things such as; spelling b's Domino, Trick Shot Pool, chess ect.

Merriam Webster defines sport as

Quote:
Main Entry: 2sport
Function: noun
Date: 15th century
1 a: a source of diversion : recreation b: sexual play c (1): physical activity engaged in for pleasure (2): a particular activity (as an athletic game) so engaged in
2 a: pleasantry, jest b: often mean-spirited jesting : mockery, derision
3 a: something tossed or driven about in or as if in play b: laughingstock
4 a: sportsman b: a person considered with respect to living up to the ideals of sportsmanship <a good sport> <a poor sport> c: a companionable person
5: an individual exhibiting a sudden deviation from type beyond the normal limits of individual variation usually as a result of mutation especially of somatic tissue

so in theory, poker is a sport based on 1a- "source of diversion."

though I think they should revise this...

Golf is a sport and bowling is borderline.

If they show it because of Competition, they might aswell broadcast and reading competition with some commentators, and comment on the book they're reading. Too me its just pointless, does anyone actually enjoy watching Chess ect.?

Sports like Basketball, Baseball ect. People train there whole life in becoming what they are, hard work and persistence is how they got to where they are.

Sports like Poker, Chess ect. are things you can learn overnight. Heck you could get some 12year old kid teach him the rules a strategy's of Chess and he could be World Champion.

ESPN stands for "Entertainment and Sports Programming Network" so hence the airing of things other than sports.. does anybody remebr when ESPN first started and some of the stuff they would put on to fill airtime?

At least ESPN is not as bad as Music Television. They have shows on MTV that have nothing to do with music (the reason the channel was started). WTF is Laguna Beach.
