And JVG inherited his frist team from Nellie as well. Though Houston has had injuries. Avery has done a better job of getting the players to fit his system than JVG, imo.
if you brought in avery though wouldn't he just duplicate popavich's style? i mean he learned at pop's elbow while he played for him. maybe you'd get more out of the riley disciple. any way all three of them are defense first coaches. maybe a little byron scott princeton offense would add something unique to the group.
true to a point. But besides what he picked up from Pop, he also learned some on the offensive side from Nellie. He's always said he tries to use something from each coach. So where he is a Pops disciple, he's not exactly a total clone. And I think it's worth mentioning Del Harris. Hopefully Avery will even admit what a resource he has there.
And on to your other point about all being defensive coaches, a very nice point. Maybe Scott's offense would be a nice counter balance.

Avery not only molded the Mavs D into one of the better units in the NBA, he completely reshaped the Mavs offense into a well oiled and efficient machine.
half of the reason the D is so much better is the Mavs are taking smarter shots which leads to less fast breaks for the other teams. they dont even really run all that much any more.
Im taking the South-East, because man they have a promising future. Dwight, Emeka, Smith, Butler, Felton ect. Also got nice veterans in Shaq and Zo' and Hill. Very well balanced team.
Second ill take South-West. Best division, and some very nice players.
For the record, Avery Johnson is a better coach than the Mavericks. There is no bias in that statement (I like the Rockets better than Dallas actually) so that is true. Without Johnson, the Mavs wouldn't be this good. They wouldn't have the great defense and discipline that they currently have.
As for best 15 from a division, I would pick the Southwest.

You can say the same for JVG especially when Yao went out so that is not really valid when comparing the two.
The Pacific has the prototypical player in every position. The only hole the starting lineup is Artest, but if he wasn't a headcase and judged solely on skill, is he really a liabilty?
Give me the Pacific.
