a pretty good list for MTV!

1 run DMC
2 public enemy
3 the beastie boys
4 outkast
5 NWA

is how i would do it. the beastie boys are way underrated. they were actually really good. paul's boutique is awesome.

NWA and ice T started gangter rap, and gangster rap is the main problem with rap today, so i'd have to put NWA down a few positions. gangster rap is practically poison. it's so bad for society.

i saw a tribe called quest on lollapalooza 94. they were decent. i liked bone thugs in harmony a lot better though.

The very same 666 Mafia that inserts subliminal demonic messages in their club hits? Eh...

Also, I agree that this is a good list considering it's from MTV. But as loot pointed out, the absence of De La Soul and the Roots leave this list still a bit lacking.

This list is obviously based on commercial appeal. Excluding Tribe, De La Soul, and the Roots is inexcusable.

Outkast = GOAT

edit: woops nevermind.. Tribe is on the list..

Just cause they're oldies don't mean they're the best. I respect my elders, but seriously.. can you name a single joint by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five other than "The Message"?

The Message is the most bitin song in the history of rap. It set the tone. Nobody on that list would probably exist had it not been for that one song. Rap was really corny before the message. Hell Dre would probably still be in Ready for the World and there would be no NWA. They added a serious side to rap. Rap music would have never made out of NY. After that song you had to take rap serious, it was saying something. And to this day damn near every rapper has done several interpretations of that song.

It's like how Go Go music is stuck in DC. Until someone makes a serious Go Go song that can't be denied you won't hear it nowhere else.

although i believe soul food is one of the best hiphop albums ever, i think theyre both a notch below the rest.

The only right list would include these:

Run DMC
PE
NWA
Wu Tang
Threacherous Three
EPMD
De La Soul
Beastie Boys
ATCQ
Outkast

honourable mention:

Geto Boys
2 Live Crew
UGK
Salt n Pepa
Ultramagnetic MC's
Cold Crush Brothers
Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five
