I've flown a ton on Malaysia, their Asia to LAX route is one of the best around. Very unfortunate that this happened, it is a class airline with a great safety record. From where it allegedly wrecked off the southern coast of Vietnam looks like it went down shortly after reaching cruising altitude, I wonder what the hell happened?

Oh god. I'm traveling to Asia in 10 days and although I fly frequently, I'm terrified of flying.

It had to be catastrophic damage to the plane. I read that commercial airlines are designed to glide for something 90 miles after engine failure at 30,000 feet. They would have had 15 minutes to radio that their engines failed. This is assuming they could communicate by radio.

I wonder if the plane was blown out of the sky.

This just in on CNN and BBC websites:

Separately, it has been reported that two passengers who were listed on the plane's manifest - an Italian and an Austrian - were not actually on the flight but had had their passports stolen in the past two years in Thailand.

now I don't want to cast aspersions as Malaysia is not a fanatical Muslim country it is in reality one of the most mild ones, but stolen passports, leaving a Muslim country and going to China who just had an incident last week with Muslim separatists going knife crazy in a Train station and it isn't too hard to put the pieces together.

Shit might just get real, and it will be REAL interesting to see how China takes this.

Laughing at the misfortunes of others is a pretty elemental part of comedy. A joke that isn't made at someone's expense is most likely not a good joke. Stop telling people what they should or shouldn't find funny; humour is a means for dealing with the catastrophic, the pointless and futile; it is a coping mechanism that allows us to accept what is tragic without feeling personally injured by it. Feeling bad about 200 people randomly dying doesn't do anybody any favours, and if any humour can be gleaned from such a tragedy, then that is a positive.

People who take life too seriously and lack a sense of humour are not to be trusted.

We'll know whether it's a random act of terror or part of the global financial terror program if the major countries involved use it as an excuse to start stripping rights and ramping up authority/surveillance.

It's odd that is just disappeared like that. Completely fell of the grid. Hopefully they managed to land on the water and are in a safe situation out at sea.

I hope this isn't a terrorist attack.

I have read landing on water is worse than land. When flying that fast the water acts the same as any other hard surface but the water makes it harder for rescue missions and other stuff.

I'm not sure. But considering no one has spotted any debris or fires on land I'm assuming that is where the plane went down. They also have a large navy presence from multiple countries scanning the area.

I hate reading about plane accidents. Especially 4 days before I get on one
