Sebastian Telfair: How many years until he's out of the league?
Let's look at each of Telfair's seasons: 04-05:
Played behing Van Exel and Stoudamire all season and showed glimpses of being a good point guard. It was hard to get a hold of what sort of player he would be because he didn't get as much court time as I'd like to see on such an awful team. Finished the season with two very good games to highlight his best month that season, April. Biggest problems were: turnovers, bad defense and bad shot selection. Outplayed by: Damon Stoudamire and an aging broken down Nick Van Exel.
05-06:
Started the season erratic, and Steve Blake and Jarret Jack started eating into his minutes, with Blake eventually outplaying him and taking his starting spot. Jack ended up higher than him in the rotation. He had a solid April again. Conditioning could be an issue. Biggest problem's were: turnovers, bad defense and bad shot selection. Outplayed by: Steve Blake and Jarret Jack
06-07:
Was traded to the Celtics for rookie Randy Foye, who then was shipped to the TWolves for ROY candidate Brandon Roy for the TrailBlazers.
Played well i nthe preseason, and then was the starting point guard on opening night a few days after Christmas Rivers gave him a well-deserved present demoting him to the bench. As the season has gone on, it is evident he has similar skills to his cousin, but none of the fire within, and desire to succeed. Rajon Rondo is now looking like he is the future at point guard by the Celtics and Ainge has admitted he only took Telfair because he was worried they wouldn't get Rondo, and they didn't want Rondo that high. Biggest problems: turnovers, terrible jumpshot, bad defense and lack of confidence/ intellignce. Outplayed by: Delonte West and Rajon Rondo.

I think you're wrong there. People will continue to give him chances. Once his rookie contract is up I see him bouncing around a few teams for awhile and then out on his ass. Maybe he can do a segment on his cousin's talk show.

What if he gets picked up, and then cut from a team? then he'll just have to go play in Euroleague like all the rest of the rejects.
And the only reason people would give him another chance, its bcoz hes suppose to have this completley awesome upside, which only shows up briefly once ever full moon.

poster boy for the age limit
I am not a Telfair fan at all, but he got a lot of money by skipping college. He made the right choice imo. If he went to college I'm not sure if he would have been drafted in the first round. Also, you could kiss that HUGE endorsement money he got from Adidas away too. I don't think playing college would have really helped him much to be honest. He's just not that special of a player like some people wanted to believe.

yeah he got paid in the short term but it would be interesting to see what might have been.
People who go to the L early are often freaks or physically advanced.
PGs dont go early because there is so much more for them to learn.
A college apprentiship would have benifited him greatly
running a team
shooting
understanding the game
honing skills in a more controlled environment
going to college helps PGs
it is wrong to assume he wouldn't get better in college where practices focus more on individual skills
Re: Sebastian Telfair: How many years until he's out of the league?
Lots of guys go to college and don't learn a thing about playing bball. If college coaches really cared about how guys were going to be in the NBA then guys like Antawn Jamison and Shawn Marion would work on their dribbling skills, Shannon Brown would have been taught how to play point guard, Udonis Haslem wouldn't have spent four years at center, etc. There's a good chance that Pitino wouldn't have taught Telfair any more than he knows now if Telfair went to Louisville. Going to college gives a player more opportunities to impress scouts before draft day but it's not necessarily going to create a better ballplayer. How many of the NBA's best players never went to college? NBA coaches can teach basketball basics, too.
As for Telfair's career...he will stay in the league, but won't be a long-time starter. He'll be an offensive spark off the bench in his prime.
