Default Independent NCAA basketball teams and NCAA tournament

Can an independent basketball team make the NCAA post season tournament or the NIT?

Thanks,

Mark

Independant schools such as Utah Valley State, North Dakota, etc.

Oh...yeah I thought that's what he meant but I had forgotten that there was an Independant league in basketball.

But yes, they can. They don't have a conference tourney, so they'd basically have to get an at-large bid.

The only two teams who have a slim chance of making the tourney are Utah Valley and North Dakota State.

Thanks Timmeh,

Has an Independent team ever got an at large bid? Anything I read about Utah Valley state doesn't mention them being able to get into the NCAA or NIT.

Thanks,

Mark

Those teams aren't getting in the tournament because they aren't good enough. They're perfectly eligible, it's just that they suck.

Notre Dame and DePaul used to be independant and two of the elite programs in the nation.
