you guys are debating somones loss? its bad either way and there is no need to pick scenerios about which one would hurt more because losing a child would hurt no matter what so grow up and stop making this a reason to debate, we arent talking about which player is better or something, its a child dying

Either that or the writer (for some odd reason) wanted to emphasize the woman's relationship with the child, despite the fact that the normal connection one makes is that your wife = the mother of your child, even if that's not always the case today.
