Default Re: Laker News: Byron Scott Named New Lakers Head Coach **Welcome Back Byron Scott!!**

Scott is the only one out of the six known candidates -- along with Kurt Rambis, Alvin Gentry, Mike Dunleavy, Lionel Hollins and George Karl -- who had multiple interviews for the coaching vacancy created April 30 when Mike D'Antoni resigned.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak acknowledged the drawn-out coaching search and appreciated how Scott handled the wait.

"I just want to thank him for his patience the last six or seven weeks," Kupchak said. "I think it was clear, at least it was clear to us, that Byron was always our first choice."

the bigger issue will be about reasonable expectations for scott. already, the pressure will be tremendous, but reality is that a coach can only do so much when the team has limited overall talent.

people will need to be pragmatic. the hype in the papers, blogs and radio is just crazy...lol

Any pressure would come from the self entitled, demanding fans that think we need to be a contender every year. As long as this lakers team is made up of guys with 1-2 year deals, what are we to expect? They won't start truly rebuilding until Kobe retires, and at the same time we will not be able to contend either because of Kobe's contract. Bit of a tough situation.

All that aside, welcome Byron Scott! Lets see which new young players can develop this season.

Im not expecting them to beat the top 8 teams but Im hoping and praying that they will compete hard every game.
moving on, Im intrigued on whe will they get as assistant coaches and scouts etc.
Im hoping they will retain Mark Madsen. The guy is smart, hard working and can bring in fresh ideas. You then combine him with a veteran like Larry Drew who was decent at Atlanta and more importantly had ties with the Lakers before.
Worthy can help tutor Randle with his neat offensive moves and footwork.
Nash should tutor Lin in actually be a better PG and not just an attacking player.
Bring in a shooting guru like Chip Engelland, the guy is a really good shot doctor.

Default An Open Letter to Byron Scott

http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/te...oalPctOpponent

The Lakers are statistically the 2nd-WORST defensive team in the NBA this year. There continues to be a lot of talk about improving on the defensive end, and yet you continue to start players that are notoriously bad defenders, individually and within a team aspect as well.

I'm talking specifically about Jeremy Lin and Carlos Boozer. In my opinion, this is a pretty easy problem to remedy. Bench Lin and Boozer just like the coaches in Houston and Chicago did last year, and start Price and Davis. Also, you need to work Clarkson into the rotation. He plays with 200% effort, even if a bit wild, and crashes the boards really hard for a guard.

If we do that, and add Earl Clark as expected, we will be a significantly improved DEFENSIVE team in no time. This is what our "platoons" should look like.

Price/Clarkson/Lin
Bryant/Ellington
Johnson/Young/Clark
Davis/Boozer/Kelly
Hill/Sacre

Looks like you've got Byron Scott following your advice. Lin and Boozer reportedly not loving it (as would be expected). With the defense being as poor as it has been, I'm in favor of shaking things up.

D'Antoni had less to work with talent wise but a better record at this time

I believe Lakers last year before Kobe was 6-6 under MDA. But note that Pau was there. Blake was averaging like 9 assists per game. Meeks playing great too.
I don't like Scott announcing that he will "shake things up", changing starting fives etc bec it seems like he putting blame game. Hey we sucked bec of Jeremy Lin and Boozer.
Byron's first year with the Cavs, they were 2nd worst in defense
2nd year, 4th worst, 3rd and final year, 3rd worst. Yes, he had a great defensive team in New Jersey (minus his first year where they were 6th worst) but pretty much up and down in New Orleans.
Lin WITH a noted BAD DEFENDER in Harden ranked 16th in defense, meaning there were 14 teams worst than them.
Boozer (33 mins) with a strict disciplinarian Jerry Sloan were ranked 10th best 2 years. 12th the other year.
Charlotte Hornets just acquired a very good defensive stopper in Stephenson and yet they still ranked 5th worst this season.
Im not saying Lin and Boozer are good defenders, ofcourse having better defenders should help but great schemes and scouting reports help a ton too.
Every team have bad defenders, its a matter of masking them or minimizing their impact.
