Stop wasting your time trying to dunk! Work on your skills and jumpshot instead. Trust me, it's all about work ethics, not about being able to slam a ball through a hoop. If you train hard you will be able to dunk sooner or later anyway. Just let it come and stop trying.

This may be the best post in the thread. I remember our college coach saying the same thing. "If you guys spent as much time on your shots as you did dunking, you all would be great scorers."

If you want to increase your vert then you cant just play basketball and hope it will increase, you need to train specific muscle groups and your vert will increase in no time. Having a great vert adds so much to your game.
The first time I dunked was in 10th grade. I was like 16 and about 5'11. My vertical was 30" at the time. Those were good times too....we used to go to the YMCA and practice throwin it down until one time I did it in a game. I'm 22 now and its pretty easy for me to throw it down but I have lost a bit in my vert because I haven't been playing in a bit. Right now I'm getting back in shape hoping to get it up to around 35" or so.
Since a lot of you kids are obviously obsessed with dunking I might as well post a summer workout program that I put together. It's a bit of a long read, but if you stick with it you really can make some proper gains. I wouldn't start it till the off-season though when you got the time to do it properly!
With a bit of luck it might help your joints last a bit longer. Wish I had started a program like this when I was 15-16 instead of just constantly trying to jam it!
At 5'8 you should definitely be able to touch net...
If it's a long net, I can even touch the bottom of the net without even jumping (on my tippy toes). Sadly I can barely touch the rim, and have yet dunked anything on 10 feet.
I'm 5'10" and I can just about touch the rim, but I don't think I'll ever dunk. To be honest, I'm not really built for basketball and I feel like my legs are weighing me down.
However, I suspect my technique may be to blame also
