kobe gets whored on an almost nightly basis defensively. tmac was ALWAYS better defensively.
TMac has always been a better defender. They're both lackluster on that side of the ball. Kobe only stepped/steps it up against big names when the spotlight was on trying to convince everyone he was great at D and the better player. He always particularly did this with McGrady. Stepped it up trying to convince people he was better. Had to hear about his fire for years.
I remember for years that people said McGrady having to carry Orlando wasn't a valid excuse for not playing good D... but now it's ok for Kobe to use that reason. Hilarious.
Right now he plays very little defense but to question his defense throughout his career is pretty dumb IMO.
Yes, it's true that he sometimes had F the defense attitude against no name players but for the most part, his defense was pretty good but then again, he played with 3 other good to great defenders and one defensive liability.
He also had some god defensive games with this current squad.
If we're talking about his career, he's definitely been an above average defender so far? Great, definitely not. Good? Probably, yeah..
You can argue 1 of his selections, maybe 2...but 6?
But hey, this is coming from a guy who considers Kobe a role player.
but people are attributing it to having to carry more of the scoring load and not his knee. Kobe came back this year without his knee being close to full strength and no time to strengthen it. If you wanna judge if Kobe has truely lost a step wait until next year when he actually has free time to rehab it. Having had knee surgery before defense is the last thing that comes back and i doubt you really want to push your knee on defense every game against nba players if it isnt 100% or even close.
Kobe averages 35 a game gets 1st team all defense...next year he has surgery comes back fat and out of shape with his knee clearly not 100 percent--his defense falls off--but people attribute to him scoring more when he is averaging 5 points less then when he made 1st team last year. Explain the logic in that.
