Another question.

Every other award is judged by watching how players perform during games (by most people at least). However, CotY is almost ALWAYS judged by simply looking at the record, looking at the talent on the team, looking at the difference between this year's record and last years record, compared with the difference in personnel, etc.

Is this right? Can you find a CotY by watching teams play, seeing how coaches react to certain events during games, watching their sets on offense, and their adjustments on defense, observing substitution patterns and seeing how well they work, etc. Should the CotY be judged more by this criteria as opposed to simple numbers? I realize it would be more difficult to judge, but it also might be more accurate.

Gregg Popovich to me is pretty much the COY every year.

But since he'll be ignored for this award, I'd give it to one of Johnson, Sloan or Van Gundy. Not the most original picks here but they are clearly the best.

Sam Mitchell .. no two ways about it. The so-called "skilled and talented" team wouldn't have accomplished 30 wins under another coach. Taking an almost entirely new roster to 50 wins.. and that inspite of list of injuries to almost every player on the team. The way the team has gelled together so well so quick.. and improved dramatically from month to month. And above all the sharp development to his players.

And all ya Mitchell ******.. do me a favour. dig through all of the players under Mitchel's last year team... and compare their stats to this year under their new coaches.. Mike James, Matt Bonner, CharlieV, Rafael Araujo, etc.
... and also do the same with players playing under Mitchel now compared to how they were doing under other coaches last year (and earlier this year). TJ Ford, Juan Dixon, Nesterovic, Humphries, etc.
The guy's amazing at extracting the maximum outta his players and utilizing every bit of talent in his team to the full extent.

It would be almost impossible to judge coaches like that. You would have to have voters that only pay attention to the coaches.

But that will only show one aspect of the whole coaching job. In fact, it's the assistant coaches who keep a keener eye on the the X's and O's during the game and keep track of the players numbers and stats and subsequently the substitution and defensive adjustments/mismatches. A coach has a much bigger job before the actual game time and after the end of the clock time and most significantly the locker room moments n teh half-time. How a team comes outta half-time reflects much more on a coach's abilities than in-game time-outs/substitutions/adjustments etc.

there should be a rule if you win a bunch of games in the regular season then lose in the playoffs because you neglected 50% of the game of basketball called defense you cannot receive the coty or even be called a good coach.

Why can't Jeff Van Gundy be the COY? He has an entirely new roster from the 04-05 team, with only Deke, Howard, T-Mac and Yao from it. Everybody else has been on the team for 1 or 2 seasons, plus Yao was out for 32 games, T-Mac out for 8 games and Bonzi Wells doing nothing all season. JVG for COY!

No way should it be Sloan. They won, what? 5 more games than the Raps? with much more talent

Deron / Fisher / Dee
Hapring / Giricek / Brewer
Kirilenko / ?
Boozer / Millsap
Okur / ?

cmon now

I'd give it to Avery Johnson.

66-67 wins?

Cmon NOW!

My opinion is give it to the guy that has far exceeded preseason expectations.

Coach of the Year should be Sam Mitchell. People expected them to be in the bottom third of the league. They currently have 47 wins and the third seed in the Eastern Conference.

That's certainly a good point.

I still see a major problem with giving away a coaching award simply by looking at team records, previous year's team records, and the team's roster. All of that could very well have as much to do with simple improvement from the players.

Mind you, I agree my way is certainly flawed as well. In my opinion, this award is easily the most controvercial and difficult to judge.
