the jazz used to be the new orleans jazz, they were later moved to utah.
the lakers were the minniapolis lakers near the great lakes but were later moved to LA.
you probably already knew that rezz, just pointing it out for those who dont.
i never understood why the LA named their other team the clippers. didnt all the explorers come over from the atlantic?
The Clippers is because of the sailing ships and later large passenger airplanes. San Diego has a fairly large port, and don't they even have a naval base down there?
And the Minneapolis Lakers wasn't named because of the Great Lakes, but because Minnesota is a state with more lakes than any other state, they called it the "land of 10,000 lakes".

ahh, interesting...thanks jalen and vert for clearing up both of those.
toronto had an nba team before the raptors? never heard of the huskies
Toronto was the first ever NBA Franchise, along with New York. The First ever NBA game was played between the New York Knicks and the Toronto Huskies, in Toronto.

wow didnt know that. what happened to the original team?
The Cavs name kinda fits...the tall ships used to come through from the oceans to Lake Erie and i guess it talks about the Cavaliers that were on the ships or something. They still come back every summer.
The Jazz didn't change the name because they didn't think the team would be around that along, they were pretty sure an NBA team wasn't going to make it in Utah. But now it's a part of Utah, I'd hate for them to get rid of the name.
Also, I'm not aware that you can't change a teams name, I'm pretty sure you can if you have a good reason. Washington Bullets to Wizards for example.

clippers were not age of exploration vessels. And the explorers did explore along the pacific coast as well (came around). But the clipper ship was basically a very fast cargo ship used in trade.

Bull****, cough, cough. You can have the name but Michigan actually has more lakes. You can never be further than 3 miles from a body of water in Michigan.
