Default Mitch's draft record

Ever since Mitch took over, his second round picks have been outperforming their first round picks:
1st rounders:
Cook
Sasha
Bynum
Farmar
Mitch Passed on:
(2002) Boozer, Barnes
(2003)Barbosa, Kapono, Josh Howard

Second round:
Turiaf
Walton

Maybe we need to just forget about this 1st round and trade it!

Bynum and Farmar are doing just fine.
but, yes, we should trade our 1st round pick in a package for some veteran talent.

You forgot choosing Kareem Rush over Tayshaun Prince which would have pretty much won us the title in 04...thats somewhat of a reach but still interesting to think about.

He also chose Von Wafer over Monta Ellis

Lets just hope Mitch will draft a good player for many years to come. Farmar and Bynum might be his best selections for first rounders. Turiaf and Walton are potential all stars.

speaking of draft, what do you guys think of Acie Law?
He seems to be the best PG in the draft. Looks like he will go around 10th-13th in the first round. But what if we give up a bench player plus our 1st round for him? He looks like a legit PG; he would be a solid contributor his rookie year!

Turiaf and Walton will never be all-stars, sorry... they will be good or decent role players, but definitely not all-stars.

those can be hard to find too.. it's actually all you can hope for really in the later parts of the draft... sometimes you find those diamonds hiding amongst the coal but as a rule a good solid role player is all you can really hope for... take barbosa for example ,yes mitch missed him so did many others including the spurs who traded him away... if teams knew now what he'd become he'd have been a top 7 pick...

I guess the frustrating part is that Jerry West didn't miss those "gems". It's like he could smell talent if the players had it in them.

Just throwing a few of the names Jerry drafted:
Nick Van Excel (2nd round)
Kobe (via trade)
Derek Fisher (did you see last night's game?)
Eddie Jones

Who has Mitch picked that's even close to the quality of the above "proven" players?

Lastly, Turiaf and Walton are the only 2 second rounders that have not been cut by the Lakers since Mitch took over.

Don't count Kobe.

Kobe was the one who forced his way into LA.

So I don't count that as an accomplishment by West.

That's one thing I always loved about Kobe. He said he would only play for the Laker's. Much like Bynum.

Interesting... so West had NO influence over this? I think that is not entirely accurate... Kobe WANTED to play for the Lakers and West as part of it. His mere presence and reputation was huge.

The Logo did have something to do with Kobe coming to the Lakers.

Well I'm glad you asked,

What happened was Kobe's agent told all the 28 other teams (there was only 29 during that time) that if they drafted and kept Kobe, he would play in europe and not for them.

So if they drafted Kobe they would be forced to make a deal with the lakers.

New Orleans needed a good center at that time and figured it would be a good chance to reel in a veteran for them (Especially with Zo gone).

So they then traded Kobe for Vlade. NO really didn't have a choice so you can't blame them for that.
