Mullin was doing on the job training. Those contracts he gave to Foyle and Fisher just screamed "they hired me as a figurehead, but I don't have a clue about the economics of the current nba."
Hopefully, the Warriors cut Brown and Owens so we can sign them.
well i dont think cutting Billy Owens is a good idea. I mean this kid can really play. did you see him in college??? why would you cut the 3rd pick in the dra......oh....wait a minute.
He's a good player, and considering the salaries for point guards (see Earl Watson and Speedy Claxton), he isn't overpaid.
They gave him - what looks like - 6 years 30+ million., trying to beat 4 and 24. That's an obscene contract for a role player.
Is he really a "good" player? do you say that because we never hear him in trouble and never a sportcenter of him screwing up? What makes him good? Is he a solid defender? did anyone play d in GS. His range is limited, he didnt create shots for others.
What exactly makes him a "good player" besides Laker pedigree?
Not trying to jum on Fisher, but 6 years...c'mon. If this were an Isiah move, you'd be all over it.
the jazz did it again. they traded 3 real black guys for a white washed one. people in utah are having a parade at this moment. they could sleep better tonite knowing that derek fisher is comming town.
Idiot. They traded 3 black guys who DIDN'T play a lick for a black guy who will be given 20+ minutes per game. So in effect, they're even blacker than before.
Fisher is a perfectly average point guard. He is a below-average starting point guard, but not an absolute liability as a starter, and an above-average backup who can give you spot time at shooting guard due to his three-point range.
That said, he seems like a good fit for the Jazz, both the team and the city. The team has always been about no-nonsense, solid character, and almost boring execution, execution, execution. For lack of a descriptive word, they play an almost clockwork style of basketball, and Fisher, who is disciplined, seems to enjoy playing defense, almost always makes the correct play (even if it's not very flashy) and is not a flamboyant guy, will fit in nicely.
His temperment seems to be a good fit for Salt Lake, too. He's modest, somewhat reserved, and never gets into trouble... in other words, he's got a very blue-collar personality, which seems to be the type of player Salt Lake City tends to embrace. More importantly, even if the culture of Salt Lake doesn't suit him, his personality says that he'll be quiet about it and you'll never know he feels uncomfortable, which will keep him in good graces of the fans by default... unlike, say, Chris Webber's quest for "soul food" in Sacramento. ;)

Nobody put a gun to Chris Mullin's head and told him to pay Fisher. Mullen is known as one of the worst GM's in the league so let's not blame Fish here. Fish was a very good player for the Lakers. Not just a pedigree. He hit some big shots and contributed defensively and also leadership wise. He had his short comings but most of that was disguised by the triangle offense and who he played with. He was a good fit for our team at the time.
Utah is a much better fit for Fish's game. He's a decent player at this point of his career.
Not insulting - just instructing. You cannot be "just a pedigree". You have a pedigree, you are not a pedigree.
When a player has "championship pedigree", it means he's been on a championship team, so he carries that around with him everywhere he goes. Some will lend a ton of weight to pedigree:
Two equally qualified cnadidates go for a job 20 years out of college. Same experience, same presentation - one has a Harvard pedigree, the other went to community college and did extremely well. The guy with the Harvard pedigree - due to nothing other than going to Harvard - will get the job, based on pedigree.
So when I say "What does Fisher have besides Laker pedigree", I mean, he is not a remarkable player, besides the fact that he played on this great team. So that is why he got a great contract, due to "pedigree'
