Default Difference between a pick and a screen

It's most likely so simple, yet I've never been able to grasp the difference.

Theres a difference?

The only difference I know of is that some people call steals "picks".

This must be why I've never been able to distinguish them from one another.

Pick is set when someone has the rock.

A screen is set to free someone up.

I'm pretty sure the difference is that a pick is for someone who has the ball and a screen is for someone moving without the ball.

Yes and no. A pick and roll initiated by the ballhandler can be called either a "pick and roll" (obviously) or a screen and roll -- or at least I've heard various coaches/analysts refer to it both ways. However, away from the ball screens I've always heard called "screens" and never "picks."

Sorta like how all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. :)

Announcers use both terms for plays on and away from the ball.

I always thought they were synonymous, but now that someone mentioned it the announcers do seem to rarely use the term "pick" when referring to action away from the ball.

"Screen" makes them sound smarter. I'm assuming that's part of the reason why.

Now that I think about it, "back pick" is a term that leads me to believe there's no difference between screens and picks. So I'm going back to my synonym theory.

Same thing. Screen just sounds more technical. Announcers like "sounding" smart.
