The Knicks have five guys with contracts expiring at the end of the 2006-2007 season totaling $62,295,250.
(Allan Houston, Jalen Rose, Maurice Taylor, Shandon Anderson, Jerome Williams)
The total of those contracts is greater than 25 other teams entire 2006-2007 payroll as of right now, (according to another basketball site which cannot be posted here for reasons unknown).......
and as Zaza points out, the Knicks will still be WAY OVER the cap...
This has been your Knicks Neat-o Stat of the day.....

even with $62,295,250 expriring at the end of the 06-07 season, they will still be OVER the cap.
The most unfortunate thing about it is that at the end of the 06-07 season is when the James, 'Melo, Bosh, Howard draft class becomes available (sort of). Had they kept it in their pants on James, Curry and Francis, they would've been in that bidding game.

Please do not taunt the Knicks Neat-o Stat of the Day. This has been a public service announcement brought to you by "Frustrated Knick Fans for a Better Tomorrow".....
You know, with 62 million in expiring deals, NY could become a good team this offseason. They'd just have to take on a bunch of crappy contracts (which is their modus operendi normally anyhow, making this feasible). Say, for instance (and I hope this doesn't happen) that Paul Pierce wants mor $ than Danny is willing to pay him. So along comes Isiah, drops 30 mil in expirers, and takes Scalibrine and Wally along with P while dropping off Chi's first round pick and maybe their own first round pick in 2008 as well. Then they call up the Nuggets and send 15 mil (or whatever) in expirer to get a hopefully healthier K-Mart. Marbury, Francis, P, Martin, and a hopefully healthy Channing Frye or lighter Eddy Curry (is he working out?) would be one of the most offensively talented starting 5s in the NBA. On paper it doesn't get much better. In real life they might have issues with so many ballhogs, but if they can just exercise enough discipline to give the ball to the guy with the best match-up they could win 44 games. Use the remaining cap space or Francis to acquire a good defensive wing and they may even be the 4th seed.

Unless I'm mistaken, you can't trade a player's expiring contract if he's not on your team anymore. Houston, Williams, and Anderson's contracts are not tradeable....
Also, have you been paying attention last two years? That's been Isiah's strategy since day one. It ain't workin'....

You've pretty much outlined Isiah's plan ever since he took over as GM. That's why I defend him just a little bit, because I can see what he's TRYING to do...he's just doing a horrible job of executing the plan. (Jerome James = )

This is true, in order to trade someone he has to be on your roster.
A few years ago Dallas traded Chris Mills' contract as part of the original Antoine trade, I think NY should be able to do the same. And I know these are the kind of moves Isiah makes, but he's never gotten a player of Paul Pierce's caliber before.

Mills must have still been part of Dallas's 15 man roster. Either that or the media misreported a key fact, which happens all the time. The media tends to be clueless about the collective bargaining agreement.
