Default Breaking: Kwame Brown to have ankle reconstruction surgery

Joe McDonnell: Huge Laker news that broke at 6:40 pm tonight that devastates Lakers chances of trading for a big name player:

Quote:
Ankle surgery complicates Brown's status
Lakers center could miss start of next season.

By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
6:40 PM PDT, May 25, 2007

Lakers center Kwame Brown will undergo ankle surgery next week, a move that casts some doubt over his playing status for the start of next season as well as trade possibilities for the Lakers during the off-season.

Brown will have bone spurs removed from his left ankle and will undergo reconstructive surgery if doctors deem it necessary, said his agent, Mark Bartelstein. Ankle specialist Dave Porter will perform the surgery in Indianapolis.

"We're not sure if it needs to get reconstructed or not," Bartelstein said Friday. "They're going to go in and test the strength of the ligaments and see if they need to repair them. He also has some bones spurs he needs to get cleaned out."

If Brown needs reconstructive surgery, he would face several months of recovery time. The Lakers begin training camp the first week of October. If his ankle does not need to be reconstructed, Brown's rehabilitation would be significantly shorter. "Until they get in there and see what needs to be done, there's no timetable," Bartelstein said.

Brown, who has one season and $9.1 million left on his contract, could have been a key part of trade talks for the Lakers this summer, but reconstructive surgery would obviously change that. The fact that Brown's contract expires after next season is viewed as a plus by some teams that are trying to get under the salary cap.

Lakers officials declined to comment.

Forward Lamar Odom, who also could have been a key piece in trade talks, underwent shoulder surgery last week and will require about a four-month recovery period.

Brown, 25, initially hurt the ankle when he landed on the foot of Andre Miller after blocking the shot of the Philadelphia 76ers' guard in a Dec. 31 game.

Brown missed 27 games before returning in March and then missed seven more games over the next six weeks because of lingering ankle pain before coming back with two games left in the regular season. He averaged 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in the first round of the playoffs against Phoenix.

"I think he's anxious to get it right and get back to being 100% healthy," Bartelstein said.

Kwame is a goner, I wonder if we can get a medical cap relief from this so we can sign another player.

McDonnel exagerrated yet again. This kind of does hurt Laker chances to land a big time player but not so much when you think about it. Kwame is just a filler for rebuilding teams..hes there for cap relief mostly

well we knew he was going to have the bonespurs removed near the end of the seaon, they talked about them be more of a bother than the original injury... going to indy, Dave Porter is good he is the one that works with Dr.terry Tramel the doctor that oversees the indycar drivers when they have a shunt...

he always does...lol

Also when you look at this logically, kwame has a real low threshold of pain, if the ankle was that torn up he wouldn't be able to play, and add that if the ankle is really bad no matter how much you tape it up, if there is real ligament damage then that things loose as can be, take this from a guy with a chronic bad right ankle...lol

I think they are operating on the wrong part of his body, it should be his hands that needs surgery to get rid of butter finger syndrome, he keeps losing the ball during rebounds.

Damnit, this does kind of hurt the Lakers chances. Sure, everyone will look at Kwame as an expiring contract first but some teams would also like to use him because he's a rare and much needed type of a player so obviously, whoever trades for him would like to see him play a bit.

This definitely hurts the Lakers trade chances, we like it or not. All I can say is damn. Damn Kwame.

This is bad. Yes, his main value is his contract but like I said, this hurts his value big time. Expiring contracts usually have most value around trade deadline time.

Article from LA Times Laker Blog - Note the comment about Kwame's hands... I guess the writer has the same sense of humor as us!

Bone spurs or just plain boned?

Fingers crossed those pesky osteophytes comprise the extent of the knife-work required on Kwame Brown's ankle. Worst case scenario, dude will need reconstructive surgery, which could equal several months of recovery time. That's bad if the Lakers plan on keeping Kwame around next season. And it's even worse if they were looking to deal him. I don't know everything about how a GM thinks, but I'll go out on a limb and predict that if a player could potentially miss half a season, that makes him less appealing for a theoretical swap, not more. Even if Kwame appealed to another front office purely because of his expiring smackaroos, they'd still want a guy who can play. To say the least, not a positive development for this pivotal off-season. Well, maybe the Lakers can work out a 2-for-1 deal and get Kwame's hands reconstructed, as long as he's on the operating table. Or as BK suggested, shoot the works and have the doctors make Kwame bionic. Better. Faster. Stronger. There's nothing in the NBA rules that specifically prohibits the use of such technology. I called the league offices and checked.*

All kidding aside, best of luck to Kwame. Let's hope he catches a break and it's not as serious as feared.

it may result in a belated departure... mid-season deadline instead of off-season trade.

anyway, he certainly doesn't help.
