as someone who works in construction, unions are a complete joke. there are positives to them, but fair wage compensation doesn't require a union representative nowadays.
i've read all the horror stories that construction companies have had to put up with because of unions. guys slamming beers during their lunch breaks and getting caught but not being fired bc of their union protection.
this is what happens to workers nowadays without a union strong arming their employer:
you can't be slamming beers or using drugs when you're working on a scaffold or other aerial platforms.
Stop acting like a fat mom. We can handle our beers.
I'm currently in a unionized position and I think its great. Excellent pay and outstanding benefits.
But the best thing about being in a union is how it creates a layer of insulation between the worker and corporate bullshit. You are far less likely to get hassled over petty shit; you dont really get those abuse-of-power bosses (that I ran into in my non-union days). No one wants to cause a stir, and the corporate indoctrination crap isn't there. I can go to work, do my job, and leave. Lovely.
Long live unions. Corporate America can eat a dick.
