Default Stupid baseball question

I don't know a thing about baseball, and I'm sure I sound dumb but I'd appreciate anyone who can help.

Do pitchers try to throw strikes on every pitch or do they try and mix in a few balls as well?

they throw pitches in combinations for different purposes. To answer your question simply yes. They use one pitch to set up another pitch.

no they dont. They always try to throw a strike on the first pitch, because strike one is the most important pitch. When they are ahead in the count, as in 0-1,0-2,1-2 or even 2-2 they will throw pitches out of the strike zone to try and get the strikeout or set up the next pitch.

How? He asked if they always try to throw a strike, I say No they dont, usually only on the first pitch and when they are down in the count, but when they are ahead, they throw balls.

it depends on the batter they are facing and what pitches the pitcher has at his disposal. if you have a batter that likes fastball pitches right down the pipe they are gonna through everywhere but there and try and get him to chase pitches out of the zone... some batters swing on first pitches because certain pitchers are known to go for that first strike...
it's all situational depending on who's on the mound vs. who's at bat...

THEY TRY TO THROW A STRIKE EVERY SINGLE PITCH

that doesn't mean they always aim for the strike zone though...

unless it is an intentional walk though...or there is the intentional "unintentional" walk also...that is rare though

oh sh-it....they sometimes also through it outside if the catcher thinks the base runner is going to try and steal...that is rare also too though

A strike isn't neccesarily a pitch in the strike zone like someone said. Ya, ideally they want the pitch each time to be a strike.

If they are ahead in the count (0-1, 1-2, 0-2) they will usually try to make the batter chase.

If they are behind in the count (1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-1) they will usually throw in the zone.

At 3-2 they can go either way.

It depends on who the batter is. If it is the 8 batter and the pitcher on deck they need to throw strikes. If a great hitter is up with first base open then they will pitch around him. Pitching around a batter is just throwing pitches on the corner trying to get a strike call or get the batter to chase.

as you said, u dont know much about baseball but the responses show that youre not alone. the answer is no. how can u generalize that they always try to throw a strike on the first pitch. if that was the case, everyone would swing at the first pitch. u definitely dont always try to throw strikes. if u did, u would be the easiest pitcher to hit and u would be out of a job. u try to get the hitter out however possible. u throw pitches that are hard to hit, change speeds, incorporate movement etc to try to get the hitter to swing and miss or mistime his swing and hit it where u want him to hit it
