Getting two numbers legitimately retired for one franchise

or

Getting your jersey retired by a franchise you never played for?

----

Kobe

vs

MJ

The battle continues

Obviously getting your number retired by a franchise you never played for is much bigger. There are plenty of players that if they changed numbers mid career and played for the same team would have both numbers retired.

The most interesting happening surrounding MJ's number in Miami is LeBron publicly stating back in November 2009 that the following year he was going to start wearing number 6... and it was out of respect for MJ. This was before he publicly stated he was joining the Heat, by the way.

So given that LeBron immediately went back to 23 upon rejoining Cleveland, it's more than probable that the respecting MJ line was bullshit and he intended to join the Heat prior to the 2009-2010 even starting... which destroys the narrative that he was truly considering staying in Cleveland.

The Heat retiring Jordan's number was embarrassing either way. You don't retire the number of a player whose team was beating you in the playoffs. It was a cuck gesture.

I don't really understand why this was a debate as if it's some difficult thing to do.

and despite all this

i dont see more than maybe 4-5 players ever getting two #s retired by their franchise

Popularity, peak moments, numbers, organizational relationships, etc.

The only people who might fit the bill enough to get the cache to get two #s retired is much smaller than u think

Even LeBron for all we know might not get his jersey retired in Cleveland due to his relationship with the Cavs front office and his lack of leadership there; relative to Jordan, Kobe, etc.

The entire Laker/Bulls fanbase AND organization WANT kobe/mj to lead them. They WANT kobe/mj to win as if he was their family. The intangibles and loyalty factor IS IMPORTANT in defining a legacy as well. Cleveland Cavaliers fans have learned to respect LeBron due to his immense talent and what he brings to the city; doesn't necessarily mean they root for his own personal success in the same way that Bulls/Lakers fans wanted MJ/Kob to succeed. Lots of Cavaliers fans clearly love Kyrie over Bron even though they understand LBJ is better in a vacuum.

Outside of Kobe/MJ maybe only Kareem and TD is capable of getting two jerseys retired tbqh

Just stop. Typical clown kobe stan saying stupid ass shit. Dirk would easily get two numbers retired if he changed mid career, Jerry West, Bill Russell, Hakeem Olajuwon, even someone like Reggie Miller.
