Default Curry a better player than Kobe?

That's without thinking about it for more than 3 seconds.

His career accomplishments put him at 4th since MJ but in terms of peak and who he actually was as a player, no ****ing way... take away those 3 Shaq titles and this isn't even a discussion. He's not even 4th after MJ. But of course he got them, and it is what it is... but when you look at his actual basketball ability... no.

Curry needs a few more accomplishments, but he's on his way. Both Curry and KD will pass Kobe, it's just a matter of when.

Curry has a lot to do to pass Bryant's overall career but peak vs peak that's not a stretch. Curry is his equal as a scorer with greater efficiency. Bryant is way ahead as a defender but when you're talking about a perimeter player their defensive abilities aren't as important because they can't carry a team defensively the way that they can offensively, Bruce Bowen could never be anywhere near as valuable as Vince Carter.

the main issue with curry is his portability... we dont know how he would respond under more physical set of rules and less spacing to manuever (however we do have hunches). otoh We know kobe could dominate any era because he produced under two totally different sets of rules.

Portability lol

Kobe is better but being able to place a player in different era's doesn't matter because we can't do it

Would he really be any worse than, say, Mark Price though? I mean Curry's handles and overall shooting is markedly better and Price was a top tier PG in the 90's. Didn't have the fame of Stockton, Payton, Tim Hardaway, Isiah but he was an elite PG in his own right. Is he going to be worse than, say, Dallas Nash circa 2003? Same principles apply, better overall shooting and handles and Nash was considered elite even before the rule changes and D'Antoni's system in Phoenix.

Frankly, noone outside of maybe Isiah even had handles to that degree back then and Curry as we've seen only needs a split second of room to get off a good shot. I think the big difference is his lack of size wouldn't serve as well in more packed paints and that's where the physicality ultimately comes into play, but his handle is going to free himself up on the perimeter to counter hand-checking. Nobody back then would be used to defending a player who makes a point to shoot more 3's than 2's. Ultimately everything plays off his shooting, which transcends eras.

I think he's better offensively but as an overall player?

Not sure.

I also think Curry's finals performances have left a lot to be desired, as have his overall playoff performances. But then again so have Kobe's, right?

That's one of those arguments that needs to be weighed in the context of 'scoring' vs 'offense' as far as the effect on your team. I think the better 'scorer' is going to descend into stan back and forth. Kobe obviously has a wider scoring skillset, but the most dangerous weapon between the two of them is Curry's 3point shooting, and that shooting is to a degree that the entire offense opens up and the defense extends out too far to the point of being neutralized, especially when he's got snipers on either wing.

it does matter though... its much better to evaluate a guy by his skillset frame and capability in a vacuum than just taking pure results oriented approach (which is affected by a million outside variables). Kobe bryant and jordan are GOAT basketball prototypes, mj being revision A and kobe a revision B. Curry is a transcedent player w/ a revolutionary style but we do know if you hit him, he gets worn down and those shots he needs to be perfectly on target to hit are now a few inches off and his game / impact fall way off. There was no way to make a polished peak kobe fall off his game like that.

Curry is a better 3 point shooter. And that's the only thing he is better at. Dunno what Orlando Magic's beef with Kobe is but KG and KD are not better than him either. Shaq and Duncan are debatable at least.
