They never planned on doing it forever.

It was a one time thing from the get go...

There is no sign yet of revenue loss...3% increase in TV ratings this past week.

The NFLs revenue was $13B last year...2x more than any world soccer league. 3x more than the NBA.

This^ is incomplete info.

3% increase from what?

Yes, week 3 ratings were slightly up from last years week 3 ratings, but you're leaving one massive factor out. That week's Monday night football was on at the same time as the Trump/Clinton presidential debate that 84 million people watched. So yeah, this year's Monday game had more viewers than last years game where most people were watching the debate.

Without Monday, the ratings were down. Sunday was down 4% overall and Sunday football was down 11%. And last night was down 13%.

The Cowboys played Monday Night they are always nationally shown and any Sunday would be down without them. You can only look at the week as a whole.

It doesn't matter if the debates were last year...if revenue is UP from last season it will be seen as the league is growing, not shrinking.

Here's a comparison of the ratings for 2015 vs 2016. The elections obviously played a huge role in the declining ratings last year. Maybe people didn't have much interest in the second half of the season since they didn't watch the first half but it's a bad trend.

As for 2016 vs 2017, if ratings continue to be down compared to last year which had very sharp declines that should be a worrisome trend for the NFL. I do think politics being shoved down the sport is playing a role but I think the biggest driver for this decrease is people cutting the cord on cable. Plus, it's so easy nowadays to get a HD free stream on the internet (or a decent stream). They also gotta speed up these games and not have commercial breaks after every possession.

to help give a better understanding and removing anomoly's like the election mentioned above, here are the 2015 vs 2017 week 3 MNF ratings. 2017 still showed to better, even though the trend over the past 2yrs have been down compared to previous seasons overall:

2017
Quote:

ESPN’s Monday Night Football game – a Green Bay Packers’ 38-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs – helped ESPN win the night among all networks – broadcast or cable – in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos. The game was also the highest-rated program of the night in all key male and adult demos (18-34, 18-49 and 25-54).

The game averaged an 8.3 US household rating and 13,514,000 viewers (P2+), according to Nielsen. The telecast peaked from 9:30-9:45 p.m. ET with a 10.4 rating and 17,052,000 viewers.

In Kansas City, the game delivered a 10.6 rating on ESPN and a 19.4 on KMBC-ABC, for a combined 30.0 rating in the market. In Milwaukee, the game delivered a 13.1 rating on ESPN and a 34.5 on WISN-ABC, for a combined 47.6 rating in the market.

2015
Quote:
Snagging a 9.3 metered-market result and the best ratings of the season so far, last night’s MNF was a thankful ratings touchdown for a league that has been losing ground in that metric so far this season and all of last year. Week-to-week, last night’s MNF was up 7% over the Detroit Lions’ 24-10 crushing of the New York Giants on September 18, which was up over the season opener the week before.

You have to look at overall revenue which is a combo of ticket sales, tv revenue, merchandise and other things. NFL rights are used in video games, fantasy, all sorts of shit. Sponsors pay millions to put their name on Stadiums and other things.

TV ratings were down LAST year...yet overall revenue was up...from $12B to $13B
