Default When did it become okay for Superstars to not try on defense?

Out of top 5 players in the league, only two (Kawhi and Durant) consistently try on defense. Is it because the pace of the game has gotten so fast with three's?

Depends on your definition of "trying" and who your top 5 is.

I agree that KD and Kawhi are tier 1 on defense.

However, I think Russell Westbrook is a tier beneath.

With LeBron on the bottom.

With that Said, LeBron and Westbrook both try. They just gamble a LOT.

KD and Kawhi are pretty engaged defensively

Curry tries a great majority of the time

Only two that seemingly dont try are Bron and Westbrook

Harden too if you consider him top 5

The irony of this is completely lost on Kobetards

9 NBA All-Defensive First Team (2000, 2003, 2004, 2006–2011)

3 NBA All-Defensive Second Team (2001, 2002, 2012)

So, from Kobe's relevant period as a player, that is, 00-2010, Kobe was among the best defensive players in the league.

=============
Lebron:

5 NBA All-Defensive First Team (2009–2013)
NBA All-Defensive Second Team (2014)

And the dude is reaching his years of no return - aka years of gradual decline.

---------------
In short, no comparison. As for the eye test, which is much better, from 00-2010 Kobe was a premier lockdown defender and I don't think anyone can argue otherwise.

call me when Westbrook allows someone to average 35PPG on him.

not even sure if KD would've averaged 35PPG on anyone in the league other than LeBron.

Was Westbrook the primary defender on Harden? Be truthful.

Yes.

Even if he wasn't, why didn't Westbrook take on the assignment? No killer instinct I guess.
