I bought it for my fiance a few months ago and she loves it, I have read a few books on it as well; definitely recommend it if you are an avid reader.

I've had the kindle paperwhite for a few years now. Love it. Doesn't bother the eyes and the lighting can be adjusted. Works perfectly. Having the ability to keep multiple books, and download more at any time? Awesome.

I download books (PDF) for free (torrents, etc) can I put them into the kindle without having to pay?

Yes, you can also convert EPUB files into Kindle format (MOBI) using Calibre.

PDFs do not work well on the kindle (or on any other e-reader that I'm aware of). You want AZW, MOBI, or EPUB (converted to AZW or MOBI) for kindle.

Gotcha. I'll strongly consider it. So far I've been reading books via phone. While it's fine I'd rather be comfortable

If you have a tablet, you can install the Kindle app and read books via that, but IMO the best thing about the Paperwhite device is that it is designed to be easy on the eyes.
