Each machine can cost anywhere between 5k - 12k a piece. You think every casino in Vegas is only going to buy 10 for the entire building?

There are over 5 million hotels in the US. Assume every hotel is going to need 3-4.

5,000,000 x 30,000 (3 or 4 detectors) = ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY BILLION.

Add in 98,000 public schools, 1,400 colleges (who are going to need dozens for every entrance to all of the buildings on campus), 620,000 restaurants...

It adds up quick.

The machines aren't the biggest cost, it's the people you have to hire to operate and watch over the machines. I just don't see it being worth it to most businesses considering you will have to employ someone (multiple people for more than one shift) at every machine to be there at all times.

How many terror plots has the TSA stopped at the screening checkpoints?

Zero.

But we still have them because it makes people feel safe.

Currently a hotel room is viewed as a 'temporary residence' and it is completely legal to have LEGAL guns in them. So there would have to be some policy changes on top of the metal detector situation.

TSA failed to detect 95 percent of prohibited items at Minneapolis airport: Report

Undercover federal agents successfully snuck drugs and explosives past security screeners at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport last week, according to the local Fox affiliate.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) conducted the test last Thursday by sending agents disguised as ordinary passengers into the airport in order to see if screeners were up to snuff, KMSP reported.

The TSA “red team” attempted to smuggle 18 different items past airport security that should easily be detected but prevailed almost every time, the Fox affiliate reported.

“In most cases, they succeeded in getting the banned items through. 17 out of 18 tries by the undercover federal agents saw explosive materials, fake weapons or drugs pass through TSA screening undetected,” KMSP reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with the operation.

If someone was caught trying to bring a bomb on a plane by the TSA, we'd hear about it.

They don't need to have caught the bomber to have prevented someone bringing a bomb on a plane

Maybe they've prevented all sorts of shit...it's impossible to know

The TSA is a joke but like UK2K says they make people feel safer. At the Charlotte airport they used to have a behind the glass display showing banned items that were confiscated from passengers. One of them was a chainsaw. Some stupid redneck actually thought he could board a plane with a fucking chainsaw!

TSA makes people feel safer and they should. Would you be cool flying on a plane full of strangers who are carrying whatever the fck they want?

Something needs to be in place...even an incompetent something.

Even if they are just collecting a shit ton of pocket knives that's cool with me.

I felt safe with TSA until I realized that they do nothing but stand there.

Flew from Phoenix to L.A. about a year and change ago with a few co-workers, one of them forgot his butterfly knife in his pocket and didn't even realize it until after we landed. But then again, neither did the TSA agents.

I've lost two tiny keychain knives to TSA. Honestly I'm not sure how anyone could get a butterfly knife through them, those metal detectors go ape shit even with a small amount of metal. And those machines should work even if a complete retard is working them.

Which is exactly the reason why every hotel, restaurant, school, theater, college, etc. in America would want one.

Or, more accurately, several.

I carried a lighter in my pocket on accident once. I was flying with my girlfriend and kept lighting it once we landed.

Also had .223 bullets in my carry-on once without even knowing it.

Crazy part about that is, he had gel in his backpack, which they made him throw out.
