Default Single-Payer Healthcare

What's not to like?

By all accounts from other countries which use it, it leads to better and cheaper healthcare.

Didn't Vermont move to a single payer system?

Vermont didn't end up going through with it.

But yeah, single-payer is the move for sure.

Cheaper yes. Better no. Unless you think lower wages attract the best people and motivate them to work harder.

A legitimate question that should be answered by single payer advocates is why it didn't work in Vermont (a small homogenous population) and why those reasons would be irrelevant (or solved) at a national level. Lack of political will is a cop out excuse and not the real reason. In the US, once it's made aware that taxes will be raised to pay for single payer, the support drops.

USA is #1 in medical research and has many drug research facilities here as well. I know it's hard to fathom for some but profit/monetary return is a motive for these. It's easy to have good healthcare when it's subsidized by the USA innovation and research and all your spending goes towards care.

I would argue single payer is not better either, just "cheaper". Every time I go to the doctor in the US, they take my weight, height, blood pressure etc. In Australia, they are trying to get you in and out ASAP. I've never had any of that checked when I'm at a clinic.

And Australia doesn't even have single payer. It's a hybrid system. And if you're an illegal or on a visa you can't use the public healthcare system since you're not paying into it. Will libs get on board with illegals being rejected from public hospitals?

My family Doctor came to the US from Canada because she couldn't stand working within that system. But the funny thing is, in the US, we have so much xenophobia now, that it scares away all these immigrants that could be doctors here and lower costs. LOL. The US is stupid. So is single payer, and so is multi-payer. So is the idea that these are the only two options.

Regardless, I'm going to side with the option that doesn't force one person to work for the other by law.

Yet, when people from these countries need something serious done, they go to America.

Doctors in Germany, canada and Japan get paid the same huge salaries... they are filthy rich like all first world doctors. the only profits that are minimized are insurance companies (who provide no value to treating people) and monopoly pharmacuetical prices.

after GOP passes their bill and shit hits the fan over next couple years (which WILL happen if medicaid is slashed and the mandate is gone since their will be less money in the system and a tremendous financial burden still existing that will be lumped onto the middle class in the form of premium hikes) medicare for all and public options will become available.

Single payer didnt work in vermont because the same US cost structure exists. You HAVE to cut the pharma prices down and take out middle men if you want overall cost of any system to be reasonable. People know the current cost under the "free market" system is completely out of control. It will be out of control in ANY system going forward that does not bring down insurance company profits (or elminate them altogether) and cut pharma prices. The rest of the world does not pay what we do for the same exact medications and procedures...and its not even close.

so have i...and we're the anomaly in the USA. Most people in the US dont pay into health insurance at all, get sick, and get the care anyway. In every other first world country EVERYbody is forced to pay into it which in turns brings the cost that people like you pay now down. If everyone paid their share you would pay less. But they dont. And if we tell them to you yell about socialism.

I'd rather just have a HSA and worry about my OWN health costs.

Let everyone else do the same.

If you didn't bother to add to your own HSA, tough shit.

In the world we live in now, though, holding people responsible for their own poor choices is seen as inhumane.

good luck with your health savings account when you need 100s of K treatments to fix all the problems youll have in 10-20 years from smokin all the time.... i dont think you comprehend how much healthcare actually costs. Your account would be wiped out in under a month if you develop any serious condition. you cant save for real world healthcare with a piggy bank lmao

If you want to degrade the quality of healthcare in America in order to provide insurance to all - including illegal immigrants and non-contributing Americans in addition to abolishing the competition to improve healthcare - go single payer.
