Default Apple: Yes, we're slowing down older iPhones

Still don't understand why people are so obsessed with Apple products. The products themselves have been lower quality, and the company as a whole just isn't the same.

Now they've admitted to ****ing with people's phones in order to try and force them to buy new ones.

Quote:
Apple has acknowledged what many iPhone owners long suspected: It has slowed older phones.

The tech giant issued a rare statement of explanation on Thursday, saying that it has used software updates to limit the performance of older iPhones that may have battery issues that would cause them to turn off suddenly.

Tech analysts and angry customers have reported in recent days that operating system updates had caused older iPhones to slow considerably, with some suggesting that Apple could be using the tactic to encourage fans to buy new phones.

Apple insists the updates were made with a different goal in mind: It said the performance of lithium-ion batteries degrades over time, which can sometimes cause phones to suddenly shut down in order to protect their components.

The company said its software updates for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone SE and iPhone 7 are designed to "smooth out" peak power demands, prevent these surprise shutdowns and ultimately prolong the lifespan of batteries.

But the updates can also lead to disappointing speeds.

Doron Myersdorf, CEO instant-charging battery startup StoreDot, said that "smoothing out" means that phones will reorder incoming commands to make sure not all of them are done in parallel.

"The inevitable outcome of it will be an inherent slowdown of the average response times by the system," he explained.

Not an Apple fanboy, but every smartphone OEM does this. I have last year's Pixel and the battery performance is starting to fade on me after the latest update.

Batteries degrade over time. Which is why I choose my current phone to have a replaceable battery.

We're talking about software intentionally slowing down clock speeds

Honestly, my first thought was 'people mad about net neutrality, but not this?'

I don't have an iPhone, so it doesn't really affect me.

Yep same here. I have gone through 3 Samsung S5s. I need it as a hotspot for work. Uses up battery like crazy. I burn through 2-4 batteries a day. Hooking up a power bank is a PIA when you are mobile and keep getting constant calls. I haven't upgraded to another Samsung for this reason.

Any recommendations for a newer phone with a removable battery? The S5 is still serving it's purpose just fine though.

I'm not surprised at all. It's a business decision strictly to maximize profit. How else can they make people to buy new iphones? Removing headphone jack and not even includes a headphone. iPhone 8 and X has builtin fast charging but do not provide a fast charging adapter. Apple got their iPhone users slaved to their products and they can't adapt or too afraid to try better alternatives.

I have an android phone but i own AAPL shares.

I own their stock not because i love their products. I own AAPL because the company treats me (a shareholder who doesn’t even give a fk about owning an iphone) better than their own loyal customers.
