Clever usage because we know who the better player is.
So let's break it down. How many players can Curry switch on comfortably on defense? 0. They don't even want him covering the PG if the opponent is good or better.
How many can Durant switch on? Oh shit, he can switch 1-5. Pretty vital to GSW's defense.
Now how about GSW's style? Curry started this spacing phenomenon. And no one can space the floor the way Curry can....except for Durant.
Yes, Curry has more range. But his range is pulling out the PG. Not the PF. Not the Center. (unless they are screening,in which case obviously Curry wasn't the main reason they were pulled from the paint).
Any time Durant moves off-ball, he is usually taking the big man with him. That is REAL stretching the floor. Now, you have opened up the paint. Curry can't do that.
So Durant is more vital on defense, for obvious reasons.
So Durant is more vital on the offensive end, for obvious reasons.
Relative to size, I'd say Durant's handles are more deadly, as well. The ball literally travels 6 feet everytime he makes a crossover. And it is lightning fast. No player 6'8" or taller can guard that. LeBron was made to look like a child in the Finals with the crossovers.
So, how is curry more valuable? Are we talking about moral victories here? He symbolizes GSW more? I can see that.
But vital for a team? Give me the 7 footer who can get more points, rebounds, has shown the propensity to toss out dimes, better at playing passing lanes, and sure as hell blocks better, while having roughly the same percentages from the field. On paper and with the eye test, KD is more vital than Curry.
