Default Belichick wanted to keep Jimmy G

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page...power-struggle

Two weeks before the Nov. 1 trading deadline, Belichick met with Kraft to discuss the quarterback situation. According to staffers, the meeting ran long, lasting half the day and pushing back Belichick's other meetings. The office was buzzing. The meeting ended with a clear mandate to Belichick: trade Garoppolo because he would not be in the team's long-term plans, and then, once again, find the best quarterback in the draft and develop him. Belichick was furious and demoralized, according to friends. But in the end, he did what he asks of his players and coaches: He did his job. One morning in late October, Belichick texted San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and asked him to call. Belichick had long admired Kyle's father, Mike, who not only had been one of the NFL's smartest tacticians but had also personally defended Belichick to commissioner Roger Goodell during the Spygate scandal. At the combine this past February, Kyle, weeks into the 49ers job after being the offensive coordinator for the Falcons, met with Belichick for hours to learn from his team's humiliating Super Bowl loss. Belichick believed that Garoppolo would excel under Shanahan, and when he and Shanahan connected on the phone, Belichick offered the quarterback for a second-rounder.

This is what I suspected. Bill is a very smart man who doesn't let his emotions get in the way of his judgment, he knew keeping Jimmy G would extend the Pats dynasty for another decade plus.

Everyone wanted to keep Garopolo. The question is how you do that while Brady is winning the MVP award? He wasn't taking 18 mil per and that's a crazy amount to pay to your second string QB to begin with. Franchising him was probably not an option in Kraft's eyes and Garoppolo no doubt also wanted to get his career going and didn't want to wait and see whether or not Brady can play until he's 50. It was an impossible situation.

Turns out Brady is a competitive psychopath. Most of the all time greats are.

Him being insecure about Jimmy G being his heir apparent is weird though. But honestly, there is no easy and comfortable way of phasing out one of the most popular players ever for a young stud. When they did it for Eli, it was blasphemous because they did it for someone everyone already knows is not starter material. We already know Jimmy G is for real, and Bill wanted to keep him.

Brady being upset about not being named Patriot of the week by Bill is pretty funny though. Won't affect them getting another ring though

It makes a lot of sense, because it's obvious there's a friction between Brady and BB, but I think it's another shot by the media to try to distract this Pats team, who we all know it won't affect them no matter what.

Buuut, there's another spin to this, if they lose on Divisional Round, expect this story to be bigger than it is in the near future.

Kraft will regard trade........ This is a reason why the owner should get in involved. Look at that moron in Dallas.

Jimmy just turned 26.

The succession plan should have been him. Would have sustained the pats into at least relevance and who knows if bill kept going they would be a contender.

Would have sucked to pay a backup 20 mil but the sustained success is worth it.

Now McDaniels is most likely out who is also there qb coach. I bet they don't find it draft anyone close to Jimmy before Brady is done.

Kraft chose loyalty over the team. Bill chose the team over loyalty.

Man they talked about this all day. Even had mentions of BB leaving the Patriots and becoming the Giants coach

Wouldn't mind. But they're gonna ask for a lot. Like Odell or the #2 pick in the draft. I don't know if BB would want them to do that. I'm sure he'd want his QB of the future with the pick.

Such a non story lol. The Pats QB of the future isn't even in college yet. Brady will play til he's 44-45 and win another 1-2 rings. All while Belichick coaches the team and Kraft is running things.

Who they draft this last will be their future guy or a Trevor Siemian type pickup. Kraft made the right choice you don't kick a guy like Brady to the curb when we don't even know how good Jimmy G will be and he wasn't going to sit on the bench two more years and they Pats are too cheap to pay him +20 mil a season.

If Patriots kept Jimmy G they were at a serious risk losing him in the Free Agency. Yes, New England could franchise tagged him but are they gonna pay him $30mil to be Brady's backup next year and also pay Brady $16 mil? That's a crazy amount of the team's cap space to be tied up on one position and especially difficult for a veteran team like New England whose window is getting shorter. I think New England offered him a long term contract but Jimmy G rejected.

They had to make a difficult move and it was probably the best move to make. If Brady can win another Superbowl it was very well worth it. New England is in a grind mode and they're almost in the end of the GOAT era in all of sports. They're never gonna have this success ever again so might as well ride it out.

ESPN desperate for news after their ratings have tanked.

I believe some of this stuff, but I highly, highly doubt anyone on the Pats is just looking for an excuse to go elsewhere.
