i would happily pay that much for garappolo. who knows if he will be great, but its not like great qbs grow on trees. i believe joe flacco was the highest paid player in the league before jimmy g dethroned him, so its not like top paid means that much anyway. hell jimmys smile alone is probably worth like $200m to the franchise

Flacco won a ring to get his "over-pay-day"...Jimmy played well in 5 regular season games.

I haven't looked, but I am sure there has never been a "biggest contract ever" to a player that has done less than Jimmy.

The thing with Flacco though is he already had prior seasons where his performance wasn't that impressive. Everyone knew he wouldn't live up to that contract going by his past performances.

Jimmy G isn't proven yet, but going by the small sample size he has been excellent in the games he has played. He was pretty damn good in NE when Brady got suspended, then he went undefeated with the 49ers in his 5 starts after that team started 1-10, that is pretty special. Only time will tell, but this dude might already be an elite QB, he hasn't shown any signs of being mediocre or even average.

I was pretty surprised the 49ers only gave up a 2nd round pick to get him, alot of people felt he was worthy of a middle 1st round pick including me.

If you think Jimmy's value is that of a mid-1st...then shouldn't he be paid as that?...I mean pre-rookie cap anyway.

I expected the 9ers to throw a 'big' contract at him...but not 'the biggest ever'

Ideally, in a logical world that makes sense...the biggest contract in the NFL should go to the best player in the NFL. Not a guy who shows a lot of promise.

Teams are overpaying QBs, simple as that...I won't be shocked if somehow Bradford lands another huge pay day somewhere. Meanwhile SBs are being won by back-up QBs, Eli, Flacco, and 50 year old Peyton Manning.

explain?

You think those are top tier QBs?

Peyton 'was'...but when he won a ring with Denver he was a bottom-5 QB

Jimmy cap hit for the 2018 season will be $37 million

That is head and shoulders the largest cap hit ever for a single player

Number 2 is Joe Flacco at $24 million

I can remember when fans were freaking out about Deion's 5 year contract for $30 mill total in Dallas.

On topic... The 49ers would have been foolish not to pay Jimmy. Who really gives a shit what Rodgers and Brady make in comparison? Nobody outside of Green Bay and New England will ever have the chance to sign them. Those guys don't exist in free agency. It took a career threatening injury for Peyton to be available for Denver. Looks like a great move now, but nobody was sure of anything back then. SF is locking up a 25 year old for what should be his prime? There are 2 ways to look at it... He's played only 5 games, but he has 4 years of seasoning too.

Everyone seem to forget this is the same thing Houston did with Osweiler, of course I know Jimmy G is a more talented QB (Based on his 7 starts and skills), but this is almost the same situation, only for bunch more money.

Just sayin..

Jimmys contract is almost twice the size of Osweilers.

He played 5 games last year, passer rating of 96... threw 7 TDs and 5 INTs

That earned him the largest contract ever

It's nuts IMO.

Instead the 9ers could sign the top 4 defensive FAs and then draft a QB at 9th overall. But whatever, they are the ones that see him practicing every day, not me. It's just that for him to live up to this money he needs to be a top 5 QB and I think odds are against that.

Ideally, if he has the biggest pay check, he should be MVP. Looks like Rodgers will have the biggest paycheck soon enough though.
