Jimmys contract is almost twice the size of Osweilers.
He played 5 games last year, passer rating of 96... threw 7 TDs and 5 INTs
That earned him the largest contract ever
It's nuts IMO.
Instead the 9ers could sign the top 4 defensive FAs and then draft a QB at 9th overall. But whatever, they are the ones that see him practicing every day, not me. It's just that for him to live up to this money he needs to be a top 5 QB and I think odds are against that.
Ideally, if he has the biggest pay check, he should be MVP. Looks like Rodgers will have the biggest paycheck soon enough though.
Don't forget Matt Ryan, also Mariota and Winston, if they have a good season in 2018, look for their record breaking contracts...
Everyone seem to forget this is the same thing Houston did with Osweiler, of course I know Jimmy G is a more talented QB (Based on his 7 starts and skills), but this is almost the same situation, only for bunch more money.
its also kinda similar to what happened with rodgers. obviously the packers watched him practice for a few years before he was starting, but his first big extension came after playing just 6 or 7 games.
Retrospect the Patriots had to trade Jimmy G. Sure he wouldn't have got the same contract if he left New England as a FA but he still would have got top 5 QB money.
As for the 49ers they had to give him that contract. There are teams that go decades without a capable QB (Browns, Bears, Dolphins, Jets, Bills, etc). Something in common with those teams are that they haven't won too many games.
Teams with legitimate franchise QBs over the past 12 years are New England, Pittsburgh, San Diego, New York Giants, New orleans, Dallas, Denver, etc. Most of these teams have won SB's and have been very successful.
Bottom line it's a better gamble giving the Italian Stallion insane money than constantly drafting QBs who end up being busts or average QBs. The worst player you can draft is an average QB in the first round as the team still holds on for false hope that the player will turn into a franchise QB which never happens.
vikings are very much in win now mode. cousins for 3 years gives them the best shot at that
I like the continuity Bridgewater in Minnesota with the staff that drafted him. Maybe could fit him in with cousins, but they've got a number of good players due free agency after next season too. Almost talked myself into Keenum and Teddy at this point, but you're probably right where the smart money is.
