Default Jermaine wants to be a Laker

Quote:
Lakers-Pacers talks stall

L.A. doesn't want to give up Odom and Bynum in a deal for Jermaine O'Neal

By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
6:30 PM PDT, June 14, 2007

Where's Jermaine O'Neal? Still a member of the Indiana Pacers.

The Lakers and Pacers have stalled on trade talks involving the six-time All-Star forward-center because the Lakers do not want to give up both Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom in a swap for O'Neal and power forward Troy Murphy, a source said. The Lakers would also include Kwame Brown in the trade.

O'Neal, 28, is consistently among the league leaders in points, rebounds and blocked shots. He averaged 19.4 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots last season, the continuation of a career that has been on a solid track since he was traded from Portland to the Pacers in 2000.

Murphy, 27, has outside range and rebounds well, but is a subpar defender who would be included in a deal primarily as salary-cap ballast. The four years and $42.3 million he has left on his contract, coupled with the three years and $64.1 million left on O'Neal's contract, would practically guarantee that the Lakers would pay the luxury tax for years to come.

Numerous sources have said O'Neal wants to play in L.A., but the Lakers simply do not want to part with Odom and Bynum to make it work. Lakers officials declined to comment Thursday.

Odom, 27, averaged 15.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists last season, one that started strongly for him before being interrupted by knee and shoulder injuries. He underwent surgery last month to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, but is expected to return in time for training camp in October.

Of equal, if not greater, concern to the Lakers is the Pacers' desire for the 19-year-old Bynum.

He averaged 10.7 points, nine rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots in 15 games in January before slumping badly. Coach Phil Jackson criticized his work ethic, but the Lakers aren't necessarily ready to give up on the potential of the 10th pick in the 2005 draft.

Brown, 25, also underwent surgery last month, and will be out several months while recovering from a reconstructive operation on his left ankle. He has one year left on his contract at $9.1 million, which makes him appealing to teams hoping to trim payroll after next season.

Talks between the Pacers and Lakers could be jump-started again as the June 28 draft draws closer.

What a stupid thread title. The article is about something else.
Yes, everyone know JO wants to be a Laker but the Lakers again will do what they always do, pass on an all star that wants to play for them.
The Lakers don't want to trade the pieces that Indiana wants. Quite frankly, this is all one big deja vu but the question is, will Kobe tolerate it this time. I wouldn't.

If the Lakers did that trade, they would get RAPED. Mitch being smart for once. We're desperate but NOT that desperate. Indy wants the Lakers to budge first.

The Lakers should do whatever they have to do. Are you kidding me. They're not the only ones going for JO, and I think there are better deals out there.

I'm afraid they're pretty desperate. I think the thought of having JO alongside of him is the only thing that's keeping Kobe a Laker and Bird probably knows that.
If JO is available for any kind of package and the Lakers say no.....need I say what's coming? And also, Bird is smart, not much of a Laker fan and there are other packages for JO out there.

Butcher reported that the FO promised Kobe that they'd get JO and that's why the trade demand is on hold.

This is a typical deja vu when it comes to the Lakers trades and I know one guy who might not tolerate it any further.

Odom and Bynum together for JO is a dumb, stupid, mistake. First smart move FO has done in a long time.

Agree, LO and Bynum together for JO is way too much, especially when we have to take Murphy's horrible contract in return too.

I rather have the Lakers pass. Contrary to what most think, the Lakers have more leverage than the Pacers and if trades stall, Indy will be the first to budge. Giving up Kwame, Bynum, AND Odom is giving up 90% of our front court for J.O and Murphy? Lakers don't want Kwame for Caron part deux again and I sure as hell don't want that either. We lose out on almost every category and y'all are gonna be kicking yourself after seeing J.O miss 30 games like his usual self. I want J.O but definitely not for that price.

The bottom line is that Kobe wants JO. He won't look at it from the perspective of "we're giving away too much".
He sees that JO can help the Lakers be better immediatly and he doesn't care about contracts, age, Bynum's potential in 5 years etc.

From Kobe's perspective, he's gonna be pissed as hell if yet a deal for another all star falls through.

Makes you wonder about Kobe's future as a Laker. Bird won't give up JO for anything short of a fantastic deal for the Pacers and Kobe's patience is thin and he's been to the media already. Yet again, the Lakers are playing games, something they're not good at.

We"ll see. There's a long summer ahead of us and it will be interesting. Oh my, it will be.
