Default J.J. Barea raves about Luka Doncicís control of the game

https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-j...-control-game/

The future is bright for Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic. One of the firm believers of the 19-year-oldís potential is none other than teammate J.J. Barea. Doncic made a solid first impression on the Mavs veteran and according to Barea himself, he was impressed by Doncicís innate ability to control the pace of a ballgame.

Barea recently spoke with Eddie Sefko of SportsDay, and had nothing but good things to say about his new backcourt buddy.

ďOverseas I saw him a little, and I played against him in some pickup games [last week],Ē J.J. Barea said. ďHeís bigger than I thought he was. He knows the game. Heís a rookie, but heís a pro rookie, if you know what I mean.Ē

Barea, who has had a chance to actually play with Doncic over the summer, believes that the reigning EuroLeague MVP is simply a cut above the rest of the other members of this yearís rookie class.

ďYou can tell it in one pickup game, the difference between a college player and a player who has had pro experience. In college, coaches just say, ĎPlay hard, play hard.í Over there [in Europe], youíve got to know how to play ó especially when you have the ball in his hands the whole time.Ē

According to Barea, what ultimately makes the 6-foot-6 point guard/shooting guard/small forward stand out is his understanding of the game and how he is able to take control.

ďThey donít know him,Ē Barea said. ďHeís not quick, but heís going to play at a good pace, always under control. Heís tall and can pass over people. Heís a great passer. And he can shoot it, too, so youíve got to guard him.Ē

Being a 12-year veteran himself, Barea is expected to help transition Doncicís game to the NBA level. However, if all this praise is any indication of Doncicís current basketball aptitude, then it appears that Barea wonít have much work to do.

Euroleague if you happen to see this...If Luka was in a draft with Rubio, Petrović, Kukoč, Kirilenko, TŁrkoğlu, Marčiulionis, Schmidt and Dragic what would your draft order look like?

"Overseas I barely even watched him play, he's fatter than i thought. He's just a rookie he wont have any impact and he's had pro experience, no excuses if you know what i mean"

"You can tell in one pick games who's good and who's not.He only produced over there [in that inferior league] because he always had the ball in his hands."

"He's a nobody in our league. He's slow and once they speed him up he will start to crack. The only good thing about him is his height. which allows him to pass over smaller guards.O yeah he can shoot too....but only if he's left open and not being pressured."

My impression is that it would be extremely disappointing if Doncic is unable to be a starting player in the NBA.

The real question is whether he'll be a journeyman starter, a star, or a superstar.

In a way it will also be a serious test of how far European basketball has come with Doncic being its premier representative.

He'll be a quality starter from day 1.

Also, **** this "he's not quick" bs. He's quick for his size.

Putting moves on Porzingis

His athleticism reminds me of young Larry Bird. Not the most explosive guy, but quick enough with a good sense for angles. It's important but people really focus too much on the athletic thing because he's white lol

The brotherhood wants Doncic to fail so badly.

Basketball is all about angles, positioning, adapting, and IQ. Athleticism obviously can offer huge advantages but the other stuff outweighs it.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, just saying.

If J.J "Bran Lockdown" Barea says so, it must be true.
