Default More versatile actor: Brad Pitt vs. Jonny Depp

Now before we jump the gun and go with the "cooler" answer and pick Depp, note this, Depp has never really played a successful role where he's just an average ordinary guy (see Nick of Time). Which actor has a better range?

Notable roles:

Brad Pitt
- Louie The Vampire, Interview With a Vampire
- Tyler Durden, Fight Club
- Achilles, Troy
- Freaky dude, Twelve Monkeys
- Irish Boxer, Snatch
- Cowboy guy, Legends of the Fall
- Rusty Ryan, Ocean's Eleven
- Stoner, True Romance
- Death, Meet Joe Black

Jonny Depp
Edward Scissorhands
Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Carribean
Willy Wonka
Ichabod Crane, Sleepy Hallow
Gilbert Grape, What's Eating Gilbert Grape
FBI Agent, Once Upon A Time in Mexico
Pirate, Chocolat
Scizo, Secret Window
Donnie Brasco
Don Juan De Marco

Like I've mentioned, Depp doesn't sell me when he' splaying your average "normal" type charatcer. He excels when he plays a role of soemone who's slightly to immensely dimented. Pitt at least can extend that range into a normal type guy. Heck, he could play the role of a family man, in which I couldn't see depp really selling it.

I don't think Pitt could pull off a family man either...can't really see it

Depp has far more range and has played plenty of 'normal" roles before

I would love to see if Pitt could pull of pirates or willy wonka...he couldn't because he doesn't have the talent

Normal roles? Like which one's? He's sucked azz at all of them. But I'll give him this, he plays a mentally abnormal charatcter better than anybody in Hollywood.

On the same premise, I don't see Depp pulling of a Greek God or an imaginary friend who is a boxer who likes to make soap.

Depp is one of my all-time favorite actors but it's none sense to say he's 3 times better then Brad Pitt who's a very underrated actor...I like ALOT of his movies, I think they are about even personally.

he was some what normal in these:

Secret Window (he played a guy with multiple personalities but one of them was normal)
Blow (he played a family man)
The Astronauts Wife

and he grew up playing in 21 jump street...

I also beleive that Depp would have been very capable of pulling off Fight Club

A family man? Who sell's crack? Pretty normal.

The Astronauts Wife

I thought he sucked in that one

The most normal character was Peter DeLuise. But Depp was cool in that show for sure.

you know what I ment...he played roles in which the personality of the charater was normal...not a crazy personality like Willy Wonka or Fear and Loathing....he can play a normal charater is my point...

2 years ago I would've said Depp, but the last Pirates have sucked so bad I will choose Brad Pitt. I always considered Brad Pitt just a pretty face that women flock to see, but now that I have actually come to understand the art of acting/drama I've realized that he is a damn good actor. He was absolutely amazing in Babel.

Depp may be able to pull off more "cooky" characters, but if I'm directing a film and my choice is between these two guys, I'm taking Pitt.

On a sidenote: Christian Bale will go down as one of the greatest actors of all time. I'm talking De Niro and Brando good. I am so excited for Rescue Dawn, it comes out July 4th, I guarantee Bale will give an amazing performance. IMDB site for Rescue Dawn: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462504/

you shouldn't blame Depp for a poor script, he plays one hell of a good Pirate.

I know, it just put a sour taste in my mouth. No doubt he WAS Jack Sparrow. He was the sh*t as George Jung too. I did unfortunately see Willy Wonka though, all I could think about was closely WW resembled a certain pop singer with pale skin who also had children come over to his house...

Of course. Brad Pitt's range has impressed me lately, but there are some roles he just can't pull off that Depp could. Same could be said the other way as well though.

Batman Begins, American Psycho, The Machinist, The Prestige and now a Vietnam POW, he's played characters that are very different from each other. He is British but has always used a different accent in every one of his films. Not saying he's the best right now, but he has the talent and he is only 33 so he's got tons chances to score that Oscar.

Too bad this will be overshadowed by the release of Transformers.

For All-time I'm a huge fan of Anthony Hopkins. I like his extended range a little better than De Niro. Guys like De Niro, Brando, Pacino, are more like the guy's guy actor. Great actors, but seem to excel at roles that require more Machissmo. Hopkins was involved in two of my favorites of all-time, Meet Joe Black and Silence of The Lambs. Incidentally, Pitt as in one of them.
